Welcome to cannabis country: A province-by-province breakdown of what to expect when marijuana becomes legal
Sometime later this year, the federal government is expected to pass Bill C-45, legalizing marijuana for adult recreational use. Although the Senate continues to debate the bill — with some senators calling for a delay — it is currently scheduled to go to a vote in the Senate on June 7. Still, the Liberal government appears intent on getting the bill passed this summer. Passage in the Senate would give the House of Commons two weeks to deal with any amendments before the summer break. That means legal sales will likely start late summer or early fall. While the rules governing cultivation will be uniform across the country, many details, such as where the drug can be bought and used, are being left up to the provinces and territories. Here’s a look at how the national cannabis landscape is shaping up, as of early May.
