Michigan Paper Manufacturer Agrees to $300K Settlement Over PFAS Contamination

Article 0 Comments Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced a settlement agreement with Domtar Industries, LLC and E.B. Eddy Paper, Inc. (together, Domtar) to address releases of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at the Techni-Comp, Inc. composting site near Port Huron. Nessel filed a lawsuit against the paper manufacture in December 2022. Under the terms of the settlement, Domtar has agreed to remove compost piles containing sludges contaminated with PFAS at the site and dispose of the contaminated material in a licensed landfill. In addition, Domtar will investigate PFAS in sediments in surface waters at the site. “I started the PFAS Litigation project in 2020 to bring relief to communities impacted by PFAS contamination, and this settlement is another step in the right direction,” Nessel said in a statement. “It reflects my commitment to protecting the public and Michigan’s natural resources. My office will continue to pursue that goal, whether through the courts or cooperative efforts.” The settlement, entered as an enforceable Consent Decree by the 31st Circuit Court in St. Clair County on June 20, includes a $300,000 payment to the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to conduct additional response activities to address PFAS at the...

Search Ends for 1950 Lake Michigan Plane Crash That Killed 58 People

Article 0 Comments A group is ending a 20-year search for a plane that crashed into Lake Michigan in 1950, killing all 58 people on board, after sweeping the vast body of water using sonar technology and even getting support from an acclaimed adventure writer. When Northwest Orient Flight 2501 crashed, it was the worst aviation disaster in U.S. history. Valerie van Heest, executive director of the Michigan Shipwreck Association, said she has mixed feelings about ending the search, which began in 2004. “It’s a hard thing to have to say because part of me feels like we have failed,” van Heest told The Detroit News, “but we have done so much to keep memory of this accident and these victims at forefront that I feel like we’ve done better for them than if we’d found the wreckage.” After covering 700 square miles (1,813 square kilometers) of Lake Michigan, Van Heest said scientists believe the plane broke up into pieces too small to be detected by side-scan sonar and likely “sunk into the muck” on the bottom. The plane, a propeller-driven DC-4, left LaGuardia Airport in New York at night on June 23, 1950, with two stops planned on the...

USC Basketball Star Alijah Arenas Recounts Tesla Cybertruck Crash

Article 0 Comments Star college basketball recruit Alijah Arenas spoke publicly for the first time about the Tesla Cybertruck crash that left him in an induced coma, casting fresh attention on safety issues with the EV maker’s newest model. The University of Southern California freshman and son of former all-star player Gilbert Arenas told reporters during a press conference Wednesday that the steering wheel of his electric pickup lost responsiveness before he drove into a fire hydrant in Los Angeles in April. He awoke to the Cybertruck engulfed in flames and struggled to breathe as the cabin filled with smoke. I start panicking, just rushing to get out.” Eventually, Arenas managed to kick through one of the Cybertruck’s windows and was pulled out by bystanders. He was put into a medically induced coma due to extreme smoke inhalation...

Solving AI’s Power Problem with Nuclear Energy 0

Solving AI’s Power Problem with Nuclear Energy

Q&A with Bob Johnson, VP Analyst, Gartner — Global enterprises are facing rapidly increasing electricity consumption driven by AI and generative AI (GenAI), which threatens to disrupt energy availability and lead to data center power shortages. Gartner predicts that power shortages will restrict 40% of AI data centers by 2027. Small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) are emerging as a viable long-term solution to this looming power crisis. Gartner predicts the first SMR-powered data centers will become operational by 2030, using sustainable power fully independent of utility power distribution grids. We spoke with Bob Johnson, VP Analyst at Gartner, to understand the role that SMRs will play in addressing the power problem and what organizations can do now to get ahead of the game. What role will SMRs play in future energy generation to solve the power crisis? Current demand looks set to exceed the ability of utility providers to expand their capacity fast enough to support the exponential growth of GenAI. Nuclear energy, specifically SMRs, provides a viable answer to the question of “What to do when electricity demand exceeds supply?” Gartner estimates the power required for data centers to run incremental AI-optimized servers will reach 500 terawatt-hours (TWh) per...
