Tornado Damages More than 100 Homes Near Houston

Article 1 Comment More than 100 homes have been damaged after a tornado touched down in a residential area outside Houston, authorities in Texas said Monday. No injuries were reported. Photos and drone video posted on Facebook by the Harris County Precinct 4 constable showed roofs with shingles ripped off. Some debris blocked roads. The damage affected the Memorial Northwest neighborhood, according to the office of Mark Herman, the constable. The Houston Fire Department dispatched five members of its saw team to cut up and remove toppled trees, spokesperson Rustin Rawlings said. The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for southeastern Texas, including Houston, until 1 a.m. Tuesday. It also issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of southeastern Texas. West Texas County Struggles to Secure Funding for Flood Prevention

With nowhere to go, water collects across sidewalks, roads and highways — the flat, desert landscape becomes a wetland in the blink of an eye. Local officials in Ector County, which includes Odessa, said the region’s drainage system is out of date. But paying for upgrades will be a tremendous challenge. Population, housing and commercial development have spiked, and the infrastructure has not kept up. Its drainage system, installed in the 1970s, is not equipped to handle the growth, county officials said. Knowing this, county commissioners approved a plan last week to update its drains and alleviate flooding. To start the process, the county is hiring an engineering firm to scope the city. The study will cost them $1.5 million. That doesn’t include the cost of construction and labor. The county will work with Odessa as part of the overhaul. Flooding in Texas and across the U.S. is becoming increasingly common. Every Texas county has declared a flood disaster at least once, according to the Texas Water Development Board. At least nine, from 1980-2024, have cost the state billions of dollars to remediate the consequences of flooding....

ICT and State Farm Launch Campaign to Combat Rising Vehicle Theft in Texas

Article 0 Comments The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) and State Farm are partnering for the 2025 Lock It Down! campaign—an ongoing statewide effort to reduce motor vehicle theft, burglary, and fraud-related crime. This year’s campaign includes a new component: parking lot signs urging shoppers and business patrons to “LOCK IT DOWN.” State Farm agents across Texas are delivering these signs to their local police departments, who will place them in shopping centers, business districts, parks, and other high-traffic areas. “Texans are losing millions of dollars every year to vehicle theft and burglary, and most of these crimes are preventable,” said Rich Johnson, Director of Communications and Public Affairs for ICT. “By placing reminders right where people park, we’re giving communities an extra layer of protection. It’s a simple message—lock your doors, take your keys, and don’t make your vehicle an easy target.” According to the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority (MVCPA), more than 65,000 vehicles are stolen and nearly 200,000 are burglarized annually in Texas. Meta Buried ‘Causal’ Evidence of Social Media Harm, Court Filings Allege

Article 0 Comments Meta shut down internal research into the mental health effects of Facebook after finding causal evidence that its products harmed users’ mental health, according to unredacted filings in a lawsuit by U.S. school districts against Meta and other social media platforms. In a 2020 research project code-named “Project Mercury,” Meta scientists worked with survey firm Nielsen to gauge the effect of “deactivating” Facebook, according to Meta documents obtained via discovery. To the company’s disappointment, “people who stopped using Facebook for a week reported lower feelings of depression, anxiety, loneliness and social comparison,” internal documents said. Rather than publishing those findings or pursuing additional research, the filing states, Meta called off further work and internally declared that the negative study findings were tainted by the “existing media narrative” around the company. Privately, however, a staffer insisted that the conclusions of the research were valid, according to the filing. “The Nielsen study does show causal impact on social comparison,” (unhappy face emoji), an unnamed staff researcher allegedly wrote.
