Accenture Awarded Second U.S. Patent for Quantum Computing
Patent is for a machine learning module that selects quantum or classical computing for optimal business outcomes
New York, NY (July 1, 2019) – Accenture has been granted a US patent for a “quantum computing machine learning module” that trains artificial intelligence (AI) models to determine when and how computational tasks would be best handled by quantum computing versus classical computing methods, and route them to the appropriate option. In doing so, it could help organizations understand where quantum computing can have the most impact within their businesses, and when classical computing may still be the best option for a given task.
Accenture’s new patent — U.S. Patent No. 10,275,721 — describes a solution to address the tradeoff between the benefits of using quantum computing versus classical computing resources. By determining when and how to utilize the power of quantum computing, such a system can help perform computational tasks in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible. Additionally, the module described has the ability to learn to prioritize certain tasks. As more advanced and efficient quantum and classical systems are introduced over time, the quantum computing machine learning module can adapt accordingly.
“Quantum computing has enormous potential, offering truly groundbreaking capabilities to rapidly solve businesses’ most difficult computational challenges. This patent adds to Accenture’s robust global intellectual property portfolio, including a patent that Accenture was awarded for a “multi-state quantum optimization engine” in 2018. It also builds on years of Accenture’s quantum investments, partnerships and R&D efforts.

Accenture Awarded US Patent for Combining Classical and Quantum Computing With Potential to Address Previously Unsolvable Business Problems
New York, NY (Dec. 19, 2018) – Accenture has been granted a US patent for a “multi-state quantum optimization engine” that leverages quantum computing technology to help organizations optimize business decision making with unprecedented efficiency and effectiveness.
Quantum computing has the potential to solve complex business problems millions of times faster than classical computing by leveraging the properties of quantum physics to process multiple computing tasks in parallel. Accenture’s new patent — U.S. Patent No. 10,095,981 — reveals how businesses could take advantage of the best aspects of both classical and quantum computing techniques to enable breakthrough solutions to problems that couldn’t be solved before.
Accenture’s patent describes an optimization engine that helps organizations identify a broader range of solutions to business challenges. By running multiple simulations at the same time, the optimal outcome can be identified, improving business decision-making and operational efficiency. For example:
- Discovering new, potentially life-saving therapies for diseases requires pharmaceutical companies to process millions of chemical formulations and it can take decades to find a breakthrough. The solution described in the patent could be used to help drug companies explore exponentially more combinations based on past experiences, ultimately speeding the time it takes to bring new treatments to market. This capability could also help expedite rational drug design, which is the process of developing new medications based on the known structures and functions of a specific molecule.
- For large-scale supply chain distributors, the challenge of deciding which trucks should go to which distribution centers to pick up what cargo to bring to which stores can be addressed for one or two carefully specified – and often simplified – scenarios using current solutions. With the solution described in the patent, a distributor could explore significantly more scenarios, asking and answering new and different kinds of questions to better understand the implications of adjusting the number of trucks or frequency of deliveries so an optimal decision can be made.
