Watch FP Live: What’s driving business this week

Welcome to FP’s weekly live show focused on key events that will drive the Canadian economy this week. Will Stephen Poloz raise interest rates this week, or will he hold fire as the long drawn-out North American Free Trade Agreement negotiations, presumably, enter the end zone?

Here’s our line-up for this week:

1.00 pm: Host Larysa Harapyn asks Financial Post columnist Kevin Carmichael: what should Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz do — hike interest rates or pause till fears of a trade war subside? Real estate reporter Naomi Powell is also on hand to discuss what a rate hike would mean for Canadian borrowers who are already reeling from previous rate hikes and rising inflation.

1.08 pm: FP’s financial services reporter Geoff Zochodne, and Rory Johnston, a commodity analyst, Scotiabank, are on the floor of the Toronto Stock Exchange to discuss the big weekend meeting between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with Alberta premier Rachel Notley and British Columbia premier John Horgan. Investors will want to know what the tripartite meeting means for Canadian oil producers’ prospects heading into the summer.

1.10 pm: FP Columnist Terry Corcoran reads out some of the mean comments directed at him — and discovers what JFC stands for.

1.12 pm: Unifor president Jerry Dias speaks to Larysa Harapyn and FP transport reporter Alicja Siekierska on the state of NAFTA talks and why he thinks the three parties are not as close to concluding the talks as the three governments think.

Siekierska also weighs in on Canadian Pacific Railways earnings on Wednesday. While the company faces tremendous pressure from governments and shippers to unclog the commodity shipment gridlock, it is also facing the prospect of striking workers.
