The smaller operators are likely to be squeezed out by pricing and the inability to get their product to market.

SPRING SPECIAL

Mortgage wars are heating up as BMO offers a variable rate at the biggest discount ever: a five-year will go for 2.45% until the end of the month. That is a full percentage point below the bank’s prime rate. With mortgage loans slowing overall, the bank is not only after new business but sustaining market share in a very competitive environment.

‘MACRO MEASURES’

The party’s over for Vancouver’s luxury property market — it’s now the worst performer on the continent and second-worst in the world. Prices at the top end of the market — $3.5 million and up — plunged 7.6% in the six months to March. “It’s actually refreshing,” one realtor said. “You have some time to breathe, to negotiate like a regular transaction.”

COMING CHAOS?

The U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement and the fresh round of U.S. sanctions against Venezuela could lead to two big sources of supply being taken off world oil markets. It might be expected that these would support the current oil price rally. But as Joe Chidley writes, the immediate reaction on the markets to Trump’s announcements was “meh” — maybe because there’s chaos to come.

SHELL GAME

Shell is selling its stake in Canadian Natural Resources in a US$3.3-billion deal that sent shares in the country’s largest upstream oil and gas producer down 4%. But as Geoffrey Morgan writes, it wasn’t unexpected, and many analysts say it’s a very good buy, and that it’s indicative of “Shell adding a little dry powder for LNG Canada sanctioning later this year.”
