{"id":7345,"date":"2018-04-26T07:01:58","date_gmt":"2018-04-26T11:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/business.financialpost.com\/?p=1581177"},"modified":"2018-04-26T07:01:58","modified_gmt":"2018-04-26T11:01:58","slug":"ottawa-to-unveil-ip-strategy-aimed-at-innovators-small-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2018\/04\/26\/ottawa-to-unveil-ip-strategy-aimed-at-innovators-small-businesses\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa to unveil IP strategy aimed at innovators, small businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Ottawa is set to unveil its intellectual property strategy on Thursday, although the details will look rather familiar to anybody who has read the budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The federal government will re-announce plans to spend $30 million to create an independent \u201cpatent collective\u201d as a pilot project to allow access to intellectual property and legal protection for small and medium-sized businesses who are trying to get in on the innovation economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The release of the national IP strategy on Thursday lines up nicely with World IP Day; the hope is that legislative tweaks and a few new programs will help in the effort to turn Canada from an intellectual property laggard to something a bit more competitive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The IP strategy includes plans to close \u201cloopholes\u201d to discourage bad behaviour when it comes to patent infringement and trademark abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"related_links\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/business.financialpost.com\/pmn\/business-pmn\/supercluster-tech-groups-to-share-in-up-to-950m-in-federal-funds\">Feds names five &#039;superclusters&#039; that will share $950M in government cash<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/business.financialpost.com\/opinion\/the-liberal-budget-finally-delivered-an-intellectual-property-strategy-and-its-absolutely-ridiculous\">The Liberal budget finally delivered an &#039;intellectual property strategy.&#039; And it\u2019s absolutely ridiculous<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Government press briefing materials note that IP intensive industries south of the border account for 19 per cent of jobs and 35 per cent of GDP, while Canada lags behind with 14 per cent of jobs and 25 per cent of GDP. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Moreover, firms that hold formal IP are more likely to engage in product innovation, more likely to export around the world, and on average pay their employees more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201cWe know IP is a critical ingredient in helping Canadian businesses reach commercial success,\u201d Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains said. \u201cCanada\u2019s IP Strategy will make sure Canadians know the value of their intellectual property and how to leverage it to innovate, increase profits and create middle-class jobs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Ahead of Thursday\u2019s announcement, Ottawa was ready with endorsements for the plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201cMinister Bains has been a tireless champion of innovative Canadian companies and I&#8217;m delighted that under his leadership ISED put in place this most significant pillar for an innovation strategy,\u201d RIM co-founder Jim Balsillie said in an emailed statement. \u201cRaising sophisticated domestic capacity in IP ensures Canada will improve the commercialization of our ideas globally.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The IP strategy appears to be mostly a retread of the $85.3 million over five years that the government announced in the budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Building Canada up into a globally-competitive intellectual property player is a big deal for the Liberal government.
