Though Bombardier Inc. isn’t planning a dramatic increase in production of aircraft this year, the growth will be driven by an expected shift toward higher value products, including doubling the manufacturing of the C Series aircraft, the EDC said.

The ores and metals sector, led by exports of nickel and aluminum — the latter a recent target of tariff threats from the U.S. — will grow by 13 per cent to $88 billion.

Lumber and forestry exports are expected to grow by 16 per cent to $39.4 billion in 2018, amid increased housing demand and rising prices south of the border — the result of the anti-dumping and countervailing duties imposed in the softwood lumber dispute. Supply in the sector has also been constrained, the EDC says, due to record wildfires in British Columbia. The uptick for forestry could be temporary however, in light of significant new investment in lumber mills in the southern U.S.

“Even with the duties in place this is a sector that is doing quite well,” Hall said.

However, though certain sectors have fared well — often due to rising prices — there remain plenty of reasons to be cautious about Canada’s export performance, said Doug Porter, chief economist at BMO Financial Group. When measured in volumes rather than nominal terms, Canada’s export levels over the past two years have grown at about one per cent annually, he said.

“There are some pockets of good news but, given where the global economy is, I’d have to characterize Canada’s export performance as disappointing,” Porter said. “Underlying the overall number, exports are grinding along at a pretty modest pace.”

According to the EDC, exports from Canada’s energy sector will grow just three per cent in 2018, while fertilizer shipments are expected to fall by one per cent. Automotive exports are also expected to be flat following a four per cent decline in 2017.

About 88 per cent of Canada’s goods will be shipped to developed markets, with the U.S. taking the lion’s share at 74 per cent. The remaining portion will be destined for the European Union and other countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The EDC said sales have shown some signs of diversifying beyond the U.S. with the growth of exports to emerging markets outpacing those destined for developed markets.

Though the future of NAFTA remains a concern for Canadian exporters, uncertainty surrounding the deal has had a greater impact on companies’ willingness to invest in operations than on trade flows, Hall said.

“What’s getting affected here is investment,” he said. “Companies are parking investment on the side because of the uncertainty. If you think there will be a major disruption to our prime trading relationship you will think twice before putting your money down on the table.”

Growth is seen being led by gains in ores and metals, aerospace, and forestry, according to Export Development Canada
