{"id":24618,"date":"2026-01-02T16:38:45","date_gmt":"2026-01-02T16:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/?p=852960"},"modified":"2026-01-02T16:38:45","modified_gmt":"2026-01-02T16:38:45","slug":"us-rice-cotton-farmers-get-biggest-relief-in-trump-bailout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2026\/01\/02\/us-rice-cotton-farmers-get-biggest-relief-in-trump-bailout\/","title":{"rendered":"US Rice, Cotton Farmers Get Biggest Relief in Trump Bailout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Rice-Cotton-Farmers-580x386.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/app\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Rice-Cotton-Farmers-scaled.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<ul class=\"nav nav-tabs tabs tabs-entry\">\n<li class=\"active\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/midwest\/2026\/01\/02\/852960.htm\">Article<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/midwest\/2026\/01\/02\/852960.htm?comments\" rel=\"nofollow\">0 Comments<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<p class=\"bloomberg\">The US Department of Agriculture unveiled long-awaited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/about-usda\/news\/press-releases\/2025\/12\/31\/usda-announces-commodity-payment-rates-farmer-bridge-assistance-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">details<\/a> of its $12 billion aid package for farmers, with American growers of rice and cotton standing to get the biggest payments.<\/p>\n<p>But while the payments were welcomed by farmers and industry groups \u2014 and fell broadly within expectations \u2014 many said the amounts weren\u2019t sufficient to rescue the ailing farm economy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-topics=\"agribusiness\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>Illinois farmer John Bartman said the payments for corn aren\u2019t even enough to cover seed costs, which can run $50 to $100 per acre. \u201cWe can\u2019t even buy a pizza for $30,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-12-08\/trump-urges-tractor-makers-to-cut-costs-as-vexed-farmers-get-aid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unveiled<\/a> the package earlier this month, but the relief plan lacked specifics on how much each farmer would be paid. Growers planning for next year\u2019s planting have awaited those details as they face financial pressure from low crop prices, the president\u2019s trade war and high costs for fertilizer, seeds and machinery.<\/p>\n<p>The Farmer Bridge Assistance Program includes $11 billion in one-time payments expected by the end of February for farmers of crops ranging from corn and soybeans to peanut and sorghum, as well as $1 billion for sugar and specialty crops.<\/p>\n<p>Payments top out at $132.89 per acre for rice and $117.35 for cotton, with a low of $8.05 for flax, according to the USDA. For soybeans, considered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2025-10-23\/china-s-soybean-feud-with-trump-leaves-us-farmers-with-huge-crops-and-few-buyers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poster child<\/a> of the US-China trade dispute, farmers can apply for payments of $30.88 per acre and for corn, the most widely grown US crop, payments were set at $44.36 per acre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese one-time payments give farmers the bridge to continue to feed and clothe America and the world while the Trump administration continues opening new markets and strengthening the farm safety net,\u201d USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>The National Corn Growers, which represents more than 36,000 US corn farmers, welcomed the assistance but said in a statement that more work is needed to develop markets to provide \u201clong-term economic certainty.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext-2\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"162\" data-revive-topics=\"agribusiness\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>Wesley Davis, chief agriculture economist at Meridian Ag Advisors, said farmers who rent fields will remain under pressure even with the aid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt still makes it hard for, especially the farmers that are leasing land \u2014 which is about 50% of acres for corn and soy \u2014 to pencil out in the green this year,\u201d Davis said. \u201cSo I think it\u2019s going to be beneficial to farmers that own their land, but ones that are paying cash rent, I think they\u2019re still gonna be pretty squeezed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis noted that farmers have already committed to most of their crop inputs for the coming season, \u201cso this isn\u2019t going to shift that commitment necessarily.\u201d He said most surveys show farmers say they\u2019ll be using the bailouts to pay off debt, so that won\u2019t translate into equipment or crop input sales.<\/p>\n<p>Walter Kunisch, senior commodity market strategist at Hilltop Securities Inc., said the payment rate should help bring stability to cotton farmers, who have been hit particularly hard by low crop prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that the rate will provide an incentive to plant cotton and not rotate to soybeans and corn in the all-important Delta and Mid-South growing regions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"copyright-notice quiet\">Copyright 2026 Bloomberg.<\/div>\n<p class=\"tagtag\"> <span class=\"tagtag\">Topics<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/location\/usa\/\" class=\"btn btn-sm btn-primary tagtag\">USA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/agribusiness\/\" class=\"btn btn-sm btn-primary tagtag\">Agribusiness<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-poll\" data-post=\"852960\">\n<div class=\"article-poll-vote\">\n<p>Was this article valuable?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-poll-feedback voted-no\">\n<form class=\"feedback-form\">\n<p>Thank you!
