{"id":24492,"date":"2025-12-01T17:38:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-01T17:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/?p=849500"},"modified":"2025-12-01T17:38:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-01T17:38:11","slug":"south-korean-police-probe-massive-data-leak-at-e-commerce-giant-coupang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2025\/12\/01\/south-korean-police-probe-massive-data-leak-at-e-commerce-giant-coupang\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korean Police Probe Massive Data Leak at E-Commerce Giant Coupang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/12\/south-korean-e-commerce-firm-coupang-logo-480361856-AdobeStock-580x387.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/12\/south-korean-e-commerce-firm-coupang-logo-480361856-AdobeStock-scaled.jpeg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<ul class=\"nav nav-tabs tabs tabs-entry\">\n<li class=\"active\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2025\/12\/01\/849500.htm\">Article<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2025\/12\/01\/849500.htm?comments\" rel=\"nofollow\">0 Comments<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<div class=\"font-knowledge regular line-height-1-5 text-story color-black f6 pt16 pb20 border-bottom border-gray-22 story-copy\" dir=\"auto\" data-qa-component=\"item-story\" data-rc-highlight=\"story\">\n<p class=\"tr-story-p1\">South Korean police said on Monday they were tracing IP addresses and looking into possible tech vulnerabilities at Coupang after the e-commerce giant suffered the country\u2019s worst data breach in over a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of the company <span class=\"tr-strong\">fell 6.5% in morning trading.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-topics=\"law-enforcement\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>The personal data of more than 33 million customers was leaked in a breach believed to have started on June 24 through overseas servers, though the company did not learn of the problem until November 18.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea\u2019s Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon said on Sunday the perpetrator had \u201cabused authentication vulnerabilities\u201d in Coupang\u2019s servers, and that authorities would be investigating whether the company violated rules regarding the protection of personal information.<\/p>\n<p>Coupang, which is backed by Japan\u2019s SoftBank Group, has said the breach exposed customers\u2019 names, email addresses, phone numbers, shipping addresses and certain order histories, but not payment details or login credentials.<\/p>\n<p>Broadcaster JTBC has reported that after conducting an internal investigation, Coupang suspects that a Chinese former employee, who was responsible for authentication tasks, was a key figure in the data breach.<\/p>\n<p>A former employee used their authentication key that was still active after the termination of the person\u2019s contract to get access to customer information, lawmaker Choi Min-hee said in a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Police and Coupang declined to comment on possible suspects.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext-2\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"162\" data-revive-topics=\"law-enforcement\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>As of Monday afternoon, internet postings showed that more than 10,000 people planned to join a possible class action lawsuit against Coupang. Lawyer Ha Hee-bong said the potential class action could seek compensation of more than 100,000 won ($68) per person.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span class=\"tr-strong\">We expect potential customer losses to be limited due to CPNG\u2019s unrivaled market positioning and Korean customers being seemingly less sensitive to data breach issues,\u201d J.P. Morgan analysts wrote in a note.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tr-strong\">However, the potential of Coupang providing a voluntary compensation package, and the high likelihood of the Korea government imposing a potential penalty could result in a \u201csizable one-off loss,\u201d which will likely weigh on near-term sentiment, the note added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Coupang, founded by Korean-American Harvard graduate Bom Kim in 2010, is the country\u2019s most popular e-commerce platform.
