{"id":24372,"date":"2025-11-07T15:56:49","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T15:56:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/?p=846870"},"modified":"2025-11-07T15:56:49","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T15:56:49","slug":"explosion-at-mississippi-chemical-plant-causes-ammonia-leak-evacuations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2025\/11\/07\/explosion-at-mississippi-chemical-plant-causes-ammonia-leak-evacuations\/","title":{"rendered":"Explosion at Mississippi Chemical Plant Causes Ammonia Leak, Evacuations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Ammonia-tank-Adobe-editorial-580x387.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Ammonia-tank-Adobe-editorial-scaled.jpeg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<ul class=\"nav nav-tabs tabs tabs-entry\">\n<li class=\"active\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/southeast\/2025\/11\/07\/846870.htm\">Article<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/southeast\/2025\/11\/07\/846870.htm?comments\" rel=\"nofollow\">0 Comments<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<p>An explosion at a hydrogen and nitrogen product manufacturer in Mississippi on Wednesday caused an ammonia leak and forced nearby residents to evacuate, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Mississippi Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/tate-reeves\">Tate Reeves<\/a> said in a post on the social platform X that emergency officials from across the state were responding to the anhydrous ammonia leak at CF Industries\u2019 plant north of Yazoo City.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-topics=\"chemicals\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>No deaths or injuries have been reported, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you to all of Mississippi\u2019s first responders and emergency managers for quickly responding to the leak,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Photos and video posted online show a large plume of yellowish smoke rising above the facility, which includes an ammonia plant and four nitric acid plants, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>The facility is able to store about 48,000 tons of ammonia, although the exact amount there when the explosion took place was not immediately clear.<\/p>\n<p>CF Industries said in a statement that there are no injuries, and \u201call employees and contractors on site at the time of the incident have been safely accounted for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andre Robinson, who lives about a half-mile (800 meters) from the facility, said he and his son were getting ready to make gumbo when he heard what sounded like a sonic boom or a tree crashing on his house.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext-2\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"162\" data-revive-topics=\"chemicals\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere was a boom and then the house shook,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>When he looked outside, Robinson said he saw smoke rising from the facility and started to smell a strong scent of ammonia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re used to the ammonia smell, but not that bad,\u201d he said, adding that his family has since evacuated to Jackson.<\/p>\n<p>Part of U.S. Route 49E was temporarily closed, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n<p>The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality said in a post on X that \u201cair monitoring operations are underway and will continue as long as necessary to ensure public safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anhydrous ammonia is used as a fertilizer to help provide nitrogen for corn and wheat plants, according to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
