{"id":24113,"date":"2025-09-16T11:37:20","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T11:37:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/?p=839261"},"modified":"2025-09-16T11:37:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T11:37:20","slug":"trump-sues-the-new-york-times-for-defamation-and-libel-seeks-15-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2025\/09\/16\/trump-sues-the-new-york-times-for-defamation-and-libel-seeks-15-billion\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Sues The New York Times for Defamation and Libel, Seeks $15 Billion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/img\/social\/opengraph\/ij-social-lawsuits-1200x630.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<ul class=\"nav nav-tabs tabs tabs-entry\">\n<li class=\"active\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/east\/2025\/09\/16\/839261.htm\">Article<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/east\/2025\/09\/16\/839261.htm?comments\" rel=\"nofollow\">0 Comments<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<p class=\"reuters\">U.S. President Donald Trump sued the New York Times, four of its reporters, and publisher Penguin Random House for at least $15 billion on Monday, claiming defamation and libel, and citing reputational damage, a Florida court filing showed.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s suit cites a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/30\/opinion\/editorials\/kamala-harris-2024-endorsement.html\">New York Times articles<\/a>, one an editorial prior to the 2024 presidential election, which said he was unfit for office, and a 2024 book published by Penguin titled \u201cLucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father\u2019s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-topics=\"lawsuits\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>\u201cDefendants maliciously published the Book and the Articles knowing that these publications were filled with repugnant distortions and fabrications about President Trump,\u201d according to the filing lodged on Monday in the U.S. District Court, Middle District Florida.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times and Penguin did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours.<\/p>\n<p>The publications have harmed Trump\u2019s business and personal reputation, thereby causing massive economic damage to his brand value and significant damage to his future financial prospects, Trump\u2019s lawyers said in the filing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe harm to the value of TMTG (Trump Media and Technology Group) stock is one example of how the Defendants\u2019 defamation has injured President Trump,\u201d said his lawyers, citing \u201ca precipitous decline in the stock price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TMTG stock has been under pressure in recent months fueled by worries about the end of a so-called lock-up period related to its stock market debut in March.<\/p>\n<p>The filing comes after Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/10\/business\/media\/trump-new-york-times-epstein.html\">threatened<\/a> last week to sue the New York Times for its reporting on anallegedly sexually suggestive note and drawing given to Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext-2\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"162\" data-revive-topics=\"lawsuits\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>Epstein, the disgraced financier and sex offender, died by suicide in a New York jail cell in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has said he parted ways with Epstein before the financier\u2019s legal troubles became public in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, I have the Great Honor of bringing a $15 Billion Dollar Defamation and Libel Lawsuit against The New York Times,\u201d Trump said earlier on Monday in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.<\/p>\n<p>In his post, Trump accused the paper of lying about him, his family and businesses, as well as Republican-led movements and ideologies such as the America First Movement, and Make America Great Again, or MAGA.<\/p>\n<p>In his second term, Trump has intensified his crackdown against media companies.
