{"id":24033,"date":"2025-08-29T16:37:57","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T16:37:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/?p=837499"},"modified":"2025-08-29T16:37:57","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T16:37:57","slug":"france-and-germany-reject-trumps-threats-on-eu-tech-legislation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2025\/08\/29\/france-and-germany-reject-trumps-threats-on-eu-tech-legislation\/","title":{"rendered":"France and Germany Reject Trump\u2019s Threats on EU Tech Legislation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/app\/uploads\/2024\/01\/bigstock-Visualization-Of-Big-Data-Digi-262677853-1-580x380.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/app\/uploads\/2024\/01\/bigstock-Visualization-Of-Big-Data-Digi-262677853-1-580x380.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<ul class=\"nav nav-tabs tabs tabs-entry\">\n<li class=\"active\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2025\/08\/29\/837499.htm\">Article<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2025\/08\/29\/837499.htm?comments\" rel=\"nofollow\">0 Comments<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<p class=\"tr-story-p1\">France and Germany on Friday defended Europe\u2019s right to adopt its own legislation on technology after U.S. President Donald Trump criticized European rules on digital services, saying any U.S. coercion would be met with retaliation.<\/p>\n<p>Trump on Monday threatened to slap additional tariffs on all countries with digital taxes, legislation or regulations, saying they were designed to harm or discriminate against American technology, in an escalation of his criticism of EU rules on digital services.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-topics=\"insurtech,legislation,tech\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>Speaking at a joint news conference with the German leader, French President Emmanuel Macron rejected the threats, and said any move by the United States to challenge the bloc\u2019s regulations would be met with retaliation from the EU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTax and regulation issues are the preserve of our national parliaments and the European parliament,\u201d Macron said. \u201cWe won\u2019t let anyone else decide for us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShould such measures be taken, it would qualify as coercion and prompt a response from the Europeans,\u201d he added, referring to the EU\u2019s anti-coercion instrument, which allows the bloc to punish countries seeking to pressure it to change its policies.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has consistently criticized the EU\u2019s Digital Markets Act, which seeks to curb the power of tech giants, and the Digital Services Act, which requires large online platforms to tackle illegal and harmful content.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking alongside Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he had told Trump that how the EU regulates its digital market is an expression of the bloc\u2019s sovereignty, and that he could not accept anyone questioning that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are doing this in our own interest and solely for our own interest, and we will certainly not be guided by statements that perhaps consider completely different, perhaps even no, regulation necessary,\u201d Merz said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext-2\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"162\" data-revive-topics=\"insurtech,legislation,tech\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>The European Commission said earlier this week it was the sovereign right of the EU and its member states to regulate economic activities.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission firmly rebutted Trump\u2019s statement that the EU was targeting U.S. companies, insisting the DMA and DSA applied to all platforms and firms operating in the bloc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagtag\"> <span class=\"tagtag\">Topics<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/insurtech\/\" class=\"btn btn-sm btn-primary tagtag\">InsurTech<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/legislation\/\" class=\"btn btn-sm btn-primary tagtag\">Legislation<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/location\/europe\/\" class=\"btn btn-sm btn-primary tagtag\">Europe<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/tech\/\" class=\"btn btn-sm btn-primary tagtag\">Tech<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-poll\" data-post=\"837499\">\n<div class=\"article-poll-vote\">\n<p>Was this article valuable?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-poll-feedback voted-no\">\n<form class=\"feedback-form\">\n<p>Thank you!
