A black rain warning was issued for a fifth time, breaking a record that was set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2025\/08\/05\/834536.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier this month<\/a> after the city was swamped by a prolonged deluge.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>The signal was in effect for more than three hours before being downgraded to a red rain warning just after 11 a.m. local time. Shenzhen and Hong Kong also faced a number of flight delays.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read More: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2025\/08\/05\/834536.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hong Kong Sets Rainfall Record as Deluge Disrupts Flights<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A severe rainstorm alert was issued during the morning for Chek Lap Kok, the region that\u2019s home to the city\u2019s bustling airport.<\/p>\n<div id=\"vjs_video_3\" class=\"video-js vjs-big-play-centered vjs-paused vjs-fluid vjs_video_3-dimensions vjs-workinghover vjs-v7 vjs-user-active vjs-error vjs-controls-disabled\" lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"region\" data-vjs-player=\"true\" aria-label=\"Video Player\">\n<div class=\"vjs-error-display vjs-modal-dialog\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"dialog\" aria-describedby=\"vjs_video_3_component_406_description\" aria-hidden=\"false\" aria-label=\"Modal Window\">\n<div class=\"vjs-modal-dialog-content\" role=\"document\">An exceptionally severe rainstorm warning was also issued for the office-dense Central and Western districts. That signals hourly rainfall rates of more than 140 millimeters are expected, and serious flooding is possible. Several subway exits were shut earlier in the morning, according to the railway operator.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Hong Kong Observatory introduced the severe rainstorm and exceptionally severe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov.hk\/en\/education\/weather\/rain\/Education_Extreme_Rainfall_Events_in_Hong%20Kong.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rainstorm terms last year<\/a> after the city\u2019s most notable black rain event in September 2023, which broke a number of records. The bureau added that extreme weather will become more frequent under global warming.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext-2\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"162\" data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>As global temperatures continue to climb, Hong Kong will likely see significant increases in its maximum hourly rainfall, according to climate projections modeled by a team of scientists including <a href=\"https:\/\/facultyprofiles.hkust.edu.hk\/profiles.php?profile=jimmy-chi-hung-fung-majfung\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmy Fung<\/a>, a professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.<\/p>\n<p>The recent downpours are flipping the script on Hong Kong after an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hko.gov.hk\/en\/wxinfo\/pastwx\/mws2025\/mws202507.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unusually dry<\/a> first half of the year, which saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hko.gov.hk\/en\/wxinfo\/pastwx\/mws2025\/mws202506.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">less than half<\/a> the usual amount, according to observatory data.
