Shenzhen, Guangdong, China (July 14, 2025) \u2013 Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has announced in a Weibo post that it will take responsibility for any losses to cars using its \u201cGod\u2019s Eye\u201d Level-4 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) for self-parking: the automaker will cover all repair costs, third-party property damage, and personal injury compensation resulting from malfunctions or algorithm errors in its autonomous parking system.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are first in the world to propose a guarantee for autonomous parking,\u201d the company wrote in Chinese (translated by the Fast Company).<\/p>\n
The announcement represents a significant development in automaker liability practices \u2013 and a first for Level\u20114 self-parking technology \u2013 as it allows drivers to bypass the conventional insurance claims process entirely for scenarios involving the God\u2019s Eye system: damages will be handled directly through BYD by after-sales service staff.<\/p>\n
BYD announced in February that it had achieved Level-4 autonomous parking, which means drivers can take their hands, eyes and minds off the driving task under certain defined conditions; the Chinese multinational automotive company is only the second company to achieve Level-4 autonomous self-parking, following Mercedes-Benz.<\/p>\n
The BYD approach may even serve to protect its users from the financial penalty associated with the potential impact on premiums traditionally associated with the aftermath of an accident and claim payout, since it is the automaker who will cover repairs, third\u2011party property damage and personal injury compensation incurred when its self-parking cars crash during the process. Likewise, the company says legal liability will be determined by whether the system was at fault, rather than the vehicle owner.<\/p>\n
With BYD assuming liability for the parking manoeuvre, the \u2018driver\u2019 is not responsible any longer.<\/p>\n
BYD has indicated it does not anticipate many claims: \u201cOur move reflects absolute confidence in God\u2019s Eye ADAS,\u201d the company added to conclude its announcement.<\/p>\n
Insurance carriers, rival auto manufacturers, and regulators will be watching closely as BYD\u2019s move promises to shift industry norms. BYD offers its God\u2019s Eye system even on its most affordable models, which start at under 70,000 yuan \u2013 approximately CAD $13,000 \u2013 for the BYD Seagull. The automaker claims that as of July 7, more than 1 million vehicles have been equipped with God\u2019s Eye ADAS.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, BYD\u2019s position remains strong in the electric vehicle market, with roughly 3.84 million plug-in hybrids and pure EVs sold last year, capturing a 20% share of the global electric vehicle market.<\/p>\n
