{"id":23450,"date":"2025-04-30T21:29:43","date_gmt":"2025-04-30T21:29:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/?p=822091"},"modified":"2025-04-30T21:29:43","modified_gmt":"2025-04-30T21:29:43","slug":"la-county-approves-4b-payout-to-settle-sexual-abuse-claims-at-juvenile-facilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2025\/04\/30\/la-county-approves-4b-payout-to-settle-sexual-abuse-claims-at-juvenile-facilities\/","title":{"rendered":"LA County Approves $4B Payout to Settle Sexual Abuse Claims at Juvenile Facilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/img\/social\/opengraph\/ij-social-default-1200x630.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<ul class=\"nav nav-tabs tabs tabs-entry\">\n<li class=\"active\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/west\/2025\/04\/30\/822091.htm\">Article<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/west\/2025\/04\/30\/822091.htm?comments\" rel=\"nofollow\">0 Comments<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<p>Los Angeles County officials this week approved a $4 billion payout to settle nearly 7,000 claims of sexual abuse in juvenile facilities since 1959.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement reached on April 4 far surpasses a $2.6 billion settlement reached in 2022 with the Boy Scouts of America that was the largest aggregate sexual abuse settlement in U.S. history at the time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-topics=\"claims\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>The county Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the deal that settles lawsuits filed by thousands of people who alleged they were mistreated and sexually abused in foster care and juvenile detention facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs were able to sue because of a California law that took effect in 2020 and suspended the statute of limitations for childhood sex abuse victims to bring cases for three years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile no amount of money can erase the horrors that they endured, this agreement acknowledges the profound harm inflicted on thousands of children over the course of decades,\u201d Adam Slater, one of the plaintiffs\u2019 attorneys, said in a statement Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the claims involved the MacLaren Children\u2019s Center, which was closed in 2003. The facility, which was intended to be a safe space for children awaiting placement in foster homes, opened in 1961 and was overseen by probation officials until it was placed under the county\u2019s Department of Children and Family Services in 1976.<\/p>\n<p>One man said he was sexually abused by a physician at the facility when he was 8 years old, while another said he was assaulted by a male staff member in a bathroom when he was 5. Children were routinely placed in solitary confinement, drugged and restrained in chairs at the facility, according to court papers filed by plaintiffs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn behalf of the County, I apologize wholeheartedly to everyone who was harmed by these reprehensible acts,\u201d Fesia Davenport, the county\u2019s chief executive, said in an April statement.<\/p>\n<p>Approval of the massive payout by Los Angeles County comes at a time when the nation\u2019s largest county \u2014 home to about 10 million residents \u2014 is facing a tightening bind of financial obligations on its $49 billion annual budget.<\/p>\n<div class=\"copyright-notice lite\">Copyright 2025 Associated Press.
