Bringing new leadership to the Fire Department is what our city needs,\u201d Bass said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/west\/2025\/02\/14\/812157.htm\">California Insurance Commissioner Rejects State Farm\u2019s 22% Rate Request<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Palisades blaze exploded on Jan. 7, driven by hurricane-force gusts, ripping through an area almost twice the size of Manhattan, claiming at least 12 lives and destroying 6,800 structures. A second major blaze, the Eaton Fire, which left 17 dead, was in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County, outside the city and Bass\u2019s purview.<\/p>\n<p>Economists at the University of California at Los Angeles estimate that total property and capital losses from the fires will be as much as $164 billion.<\/p>\n<p>When contacted for comment from Crowley, LAFD spokesperson Lyndsey Lantz said the department didn\u2019t have an immediate statement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"copyright-notice lite\">Copyright 2025 Associated Press.
