Fitch has also affirmed Mercury\u2019s property\/casualty operating subsidiaries\u2019 Insurer Financial Strength (IFS) ratings at \u2018A-\u2018(Strong). The rating outlook is revised to Negative from Stable.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-topics=\"trends\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/west\/2025\/01\/23\/809377.htm\">Moody\u2019s Expects LA Wildfires to Increase Property Insurance Costs Across State<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The negative outlook also reflects some uncertainty on the reinsurance program capacity that would be available should another event occur, according to Fitch.<\/p>\n<p>The L.A. could consume more than 30% of the aggregate natural catastrophe budgets set for 2025 by Europe\u2019s four largest reinsurers \u2013 Swiss Re, Munich Re, Hannover Re and SCOR, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2025\/01\/24\/809494.htm\">an earlier Fitch Ratings commentary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/west\/2025\/01\/23\/809326.htm\">KCC Estimates Losses From Palisades and Eaton Wildfires to Be Near $28B<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fitch noted that the California insurance market is experiencing significant fire catastrophes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCombined, these fires will result in the largest wildfire loss in a season by a factor of 3-4 times,\u201d Fitch said. \u201cWhile Fitch believes Mercury\u2019s financial position can withstand the losses from the Palisades and Eaton fires, the potential for other catastrophes provides near-term uncertainty and is driving the Negative Outlook.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext-2\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"162\" data-revive-topics=\"trends\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/west\/2025\/01\/23\/809432.htm\">Insurance Commissioner Orders Advance Payments on Claims for LA Wildfire Survivors<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fitch said it anticipates that net wildfire losses for the first quarter of the year will add 6 to 10 percentage points on the combined ratio, resulting in a projected full-year 2025 GAAP combined ratio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven with the higher projected combined ratio, it is within previously established rating sensitivities; however, it leaves little room for adverse deviations from other potential weather events in the near term,\u201d Fitch said. \u201cFavorably, the company has been able to obtain rate increases, which have helped stabilized results and added a cushion to absorb these wildfire losses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fitch also anticipates that after-tax losses from the wildfires will adversely affect capital in the first quarter. However, with earnings and investment income, full-year 2025 GAAP capital will be relatively flat compared to the prior year, resulting in minimal changes to financial leverage, which projects at roughly 23% at YE24.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the company has not fully exhausted its reinsurance tower capacity, the three wildfires have placed it in a higher risk position in the near term regarding potential catastrophe events,\u201d Fitch stated.<\/p>\n<p>Mercury renews its reinsurance program effective July 1. The wildfire losses to date will likely cause reinsurance costs to tighten, making mitigation efforts for catastrophe risk more expensive and reducing profitability.
