Pushed on whether that might include every American cell phone\u2019s records, the official said: \u201cWe do not believe it\u2019s every cell phone in the country, but we believe it\u2019s potentially a large number of individuals that the Chinese government was focused on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of companies across the world had been hit by the hackers, the official said, including \u201cat least\u201d eight telecommunications and telecom infrastructure firms in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. officials have previously alleged the hackers targeted Verizon, AT&amp;T, T-Mobile, Lumen and others. T-Mobile has said <a class=\"bold1 tr-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.t-mobile.com\/news\/un-carrier\/update-cyberattacks-targeting-us-wireless-companies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no customer data was compromised in its case<\/a> and Lumen said there is no evidence customer data was accessed on its network but, in at least some other cases, the hackers are alleged to have stolen telephone audio intercepts along with a large tranche of call record data.<\/p>\n<p>Call record metadata is sometimes described as the who, what, when, and where of phone calls. It doesn\u2019t include the content of a call but can include who a call was placed to, how long it lasted, and where it was made from. Even without the content, call record metadata \u2014 especially when captured in bulk \u2014 can reveal extraordinarily granular details about a person\u2019s life, work, and intimate relationships.<\/p>\n<p>The official said the White House had made tackling the Salt Typhoon hackers a priority for the federal government and that President Joe Biden had been briefed several times on the intrusions.<\/p>\n<p>The press call occurred as U.S. government agencies held a <a class=\"bold1 mr5 tr-link tr-pnac tr-link-story-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reutersconnect.com\/all?search=all%3AL2N3N50IE&amp;linkedFromStory=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">separate, classified briefing<\/a> for all senators on Salt Typhoon\u2019s efforts to compromise American telecommunications companies.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, Federal Communications Commission Chair Jessica Rosenworcel, the National Security Council and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency were among the participants in the closed-door briefing, officials told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagtag\"> <span class=\"tagtag\">Topics<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/cyber\/\" class=\"btn btn-sm btn-primary tagtag\">Cyber<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/fraud\/\" class=\"btn btn-sm btn-primary tagtag\">Fraud<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/location\/china\/\" class=\"btn btn-sm btn-primary tagtag\">China<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-poll\" data-post=\"803815\">\n<div class=\"article-poll-vote\">\n<p>Was this article valuable?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-poll-feedback voted-no\">\n<form class=\"feedback-form\">\n<p>Thank you!
