{"id":22657,"date":"2024-10-24T05:16:28","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T05:16:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/?p=798101"},"modified":"2024-10-24T05:16:28","modified_gmt":"2024-10-24T05:16:28","slug":"new-rules-proposed-to-block-china-russia-iran-from-accessing-bulk-us-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2024\/10\/24\/new-rules-proposed-to-block-china-russia-iran-from-accessing-bulk-us-data\/","title":{"rendered":"New Rules Proposed to Block China, Russia, Iran From Accessing Bulk US Data"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/img\/social\/opengraph\/ij-social-default-1200x630.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<ul class=\"nav nav-tabs tabs tabs-entry\">\n<li class=\"active\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/national\/2024\/10\/24\/798101.htm\">Article<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/national\/2024\/10\/24\/798101.htm?comments\" rel=\"nofollow\">0 Comments<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<p class=\"reuters\">The U.S. Justice Department on Monday proposed new rules to protect federal government data or Americans\u2019 bulk personal data from getting into the hands of countries like China, Iran and Russia by placing new limits on certain business transactions.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal, which was previewed in March, implements an executive order issued earlier this year by President Joe Biden which aims to keep foreign adversaries from using accessible American financial and genomic data and health data for cyber attacks, espionage and blackmail.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>In addition to China, Russia and Iran, the rule would also apply to Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Washington has been trying to stem the flow of American personal data to China, part of a years-long struggle over trade and technology.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, a U.S. panel that reviews foreign investments for potential national security threats rejected a plan by China\u2019s Ant Financial to acquire U.S. money transfer company MoneyGram International, because of concerns over safety of data that can be used to identify U.S. citizens.<\/p>\n<p>The officials said transactions will be banned with data brokers who know the information will end up in \u201ccountries of concern,\u201d as will the transfer of any data on U.S. government personnel.<\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s proposal for the first time gave more specific details about the types and amounts of data that cannot be transferred, including human genomic data on over 100 Americans or personal health or financial data on over 10,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal would also bar the transfer of precise geolocation data on over 1,000 U.S. devices.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext-2\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"162\" data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>The rule would allow the Justice Department to enforce compliance both through criminal and civil penalties.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. officials told reporters on Monday that Chinese apps such as TikTok could run afoul of the proposal if they transferred sensitive data from U.S. users to a Chinese parent company.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Reporting by Sarah N.
