{"id":22597,"date":"2024-10-11T16:37:55","date_gmt":"2024-10-11T16:37:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/?p=796956"},"modified":"2024-10-11T16:37:55","modified_gmt":"2024-10-11T16:37:55","slug":"wisconsin-recycling-company-fined-202k-for-exposing-workers-to-lead-cadmium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2024\/10\/11\/wisconsin-recycling-company-fined-202k-for-exposing-workers-to-lead-cadmium\/","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin Recycling Company Fined $202K for Exposing Workers to Lead, Cadmium"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/img\/social\/opengraph\/ij-social-default-1200x630.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<ul class=\"nav nav-tabs tabs tabs-entry\">\n<li class=\"active\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/midwest\/2024\/10\/11\/796956.htm\">Article<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/midwest\/2024\/10\/11\/796956.htm?comments\" rel=\"nofollow\">0 Comments<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<p>A follow-up inspection by federal workplace safety investigators in April 2024 found a Janesville, Wisconsin recycling company continuing to expose employees to unsafe levels of lead and cadmium while they dismantled cathode ray tubes from older TVs, despite being cited for the same violations in April 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Labor\u2019s <a title=\"Occupational Safety and Health Administration - Home\" href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/\">Occupational Safety and Health Administration<\/a> determined Universal Recycling Technologies LLC failed to implement adequate engineering controls and did not keep surfaces as free as practicable from <a title=\"Safety and Health Topics: Lead\" href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/lead\">lead<\/a> and <a title=\"Safety and Health Topics: Cadmium\" href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/cadmium\">cadmium<\/a> accumulations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-topics=\"waste-management\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>\u201cChronic overexposures to these toxic metals may cause severe damage to blood-forming, nervous, urinary and reproductive systems,\u201d said OSHA Area Director Chad Greenwood in Madison, Wisconsin. \u201cUniversal Recycling Technologies cannot solely rely on personal protective equipment as the primary source of protection.
