But to the north is a large, lobster-claw-shaped outbreak of dust and dry air from Africa\u2019s largest desert that could sap them of their power.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-topics=\"catastrophe,hurricane,natural-disasters\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>The budding storm looks \u201cto be in a fairly moisture-rich environment at the moment,\u201d said Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane researcher at Colorado State University. \u201cHowever, there is some dust\/dry air to the north\u201d that\u2019s presenting a potential obstacle to their development, he said.<\/p>\n<p>If the thunderstorms manage to evade the dry air and grow into a tropical storm, the system would have a good chance of nearing the Windward Islands by the weekend. That\u2019s the gateway into the larger Caribbean Sea.<\/p>\n<p>In June and July, large clouds of dust and dry air billow off the Sahara into the Atlantic. That haze, along with ocean temperatures that tend to be cooler at this time of year, would usually stifle potential storms.<\/p>\n<p>But this year is different. Setting aside the current outbreak, dust levels have actually been a bit lower than normal in the tropical Atlantic and the Caribbean, Klotzbach said.
