{"id":21852,"date":"2024-05-16T10:05:43","date_gmt":"2024-05-16T10:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/?p=774425"},"modified":"2024-05-16T10:05:43","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T10:05:43","slug":"uk-tightens-scrutiny-of-all-indian-spice-imports-amid-contamination-allegations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2024\/05\/16\/uk-tightens-scrutiny-of-all-indian-spice-imports-amid-contamination-allegations\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Tightens Scrutiny of All Indian Spice Imports Amid Contamination Allegations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/img\/social\/opengraph\/ij-social-default-1200x630.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<ul class=\"nav nav-tabs tabs tabs-entry\">\n<li class=\"active\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2024\/05\/16\/774425.htm\">Article<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2024\/05\/16\/774425.htm?comments\" rel=\"nofollow\">0 Comments<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<p class=\"tr-story-p1\">Britain\u2019s food watchdog has applied extra control measures on all spice imports from India, it said on Wednesday, becoming the first to ramp up scrutiny of all Indian spices after contamination allegations against two brands sparked concerns among global food regulators.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong last month suspended sales of three spice blends produced by MDH and one by Everest, saying they contained high levels of a cancer-causing pesticide ethylene oxide.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>Singapore also ordered a recall of the Everest mix, and New Zealand, the United States, India and Australia have since said they are looking into issues related to the two brands.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2024\/05\/15\/774219.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Before Global Scrutiny, Indian Spice Maker MDH Faced Many US Rejections<\/a><\/p>\n<p>MDH and Everest \u2013 two of India\u2019s most popular brands \u2013 have said their products are safe for consumption.<\/p>\n<p>In the most stringent crackdown so far impacting all Indian spices, the UK\u2019s Food Standards Agency (FSA) said that in light of the concerns it has \u201capplied extra control measures for pesticide residues in spices from India which includes ethylene oxide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The agency did not elaborate on the exact steps it is taking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe use of ethylene oxide is not allowed here, and maximum residue levels are in place for herbs and spices,\u201d James Cooper, Deputy Director of Food Policy at the FSA, said in a statement to Reuters.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext-2\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"162\" data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>India\u2019s Spices Board, which regulates exports, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. India is the biggest exporter, consumer and producer of spices in the world.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022 Britain imported $128 million worth of spices, with India accounting for almost $23 million, data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity website shows.<\/p>\n<p>MDH and Everest export their products to many regions including the U.S., Europe, South East Asia, Middle East and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Indian regulators have also conducted testing of all spice products and inspected samples of MDH and Everest products, though no results have been made public so far.<\/p>\n<p>MDH has since 2021 seen an average 14.5% of its U.S. shipments rejected over the presence of bacteria salmonella, a Reuters analysis of U.S. FDA data has found.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency told Reuters in a statement it was aware of the concerns around MDH and Everest\u2019s products and \u201ccontinues to monitor the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on current information, we have no evidence to suggest that the issues raised affect products currently in the Canadian market,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tr-signoff\">(Reporting by Rishika Sadam; editing by Aditya Kalra and Jan Harvey)<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-poll\" data-post=\"774425\">\n<div class=\"article-poll-vote\">\n<p>Was this article valuable?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-poll-feedback voted-no\">\n<form class=\"feedback-form\">\n<p>Thank you!
