{"id":21800,"date":"2024-05-06T08:25:35","date_gmt":"2024-05-06T08:25:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/?p=772942"},"modified":"2024-05-06T08:25:35","modified_gmt":"2024-05-06T08:25:35","slug":"brazil-rejects-vale-bhp-settlement-offer-for-deadly-2015-mining-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2024\/05\/06\/brazil-rejects-vale-bhp-settlement-offer-for-deadly-2015-mining-disaster\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazil Rejects Vale, BHP Settlement Offer for Deadly 2015 Mining Disaster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/brazilian-mining-dam-collapse-AP-580x387.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/brazilian-mining-dam-collapse-AP-scaled.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<ul class=\"nav nav-tabs tabs tabs-entry\">\n<li class=\"active\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2024\/05\/06\/772942.htm\">Article<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2024\/05\/06\/772942.htm?comments\" rel=\"nofollow\">0 Comments<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<p class=\"tr-story-p1\">Brazil and the state of Espirito Santo have rejected a proposal by miners Vale <span id=\"x2\">and BHP <span id=\"x3\">regarding reparations for the deadly 2015 Mariana tailings dam burst, the federal government said on Friday.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tr-strong\">The statement did not include Minas Gerais state, where the disaster happened, and which said it wants to keep negotiating the current proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-topics=\"mining\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>Vale, BHP and their joint venture Samarco earlier this week presented authorities with an offer to pay a total of 127 billion reais ($25.03 billion) as reparations for the dam collapse, including 37 billion reais already disbursed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/international\/2024\/04\/30\/771995.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vale, BHP Offer $25B Settlement for Mining Disaster, but Brazil Authorities Want More<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tr-strong\">In rejecting the offer, the office of Brazil\u2019s solicitor general said in a statement that it <\/span>\u201cdoes not represent an advance\u201d from the firm\u2019s previous proposal in December and contains \u201cinadmissible conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The November 2015 dam collapse at the Samarco iron ore mine near the town of Mariana, Minas Gerais, caused a vast flow of mud and mining waste that buried a nearby village, killing 19 people, leaving hundreds homeless and polluting the Doce River, a major river that flows through Espirito Santo.<\/p>\n<p>Despite increasing the amount that would be directed to the federal and state governments, the latest proposal implied \u201ca drastic reduction\u201d in obligations previously agreed by the companies, the government statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new proposal, the removal of mining tailings from the Doce River would be significantly smaller than previously agreed and \u201cborder a scenario of no removal at all,\u201d according to the federal government.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext-2\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"162\" data-revive-topics=\"mining\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>Despite <span class=\"tr-strong\">the federal <\/span>government and Espirito Santo\u2019s strong refusal, the government of Minas Gerais <span class=\"tr-strong\">took <\/span>a different position.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tr-strong\">Secretary for planning and management Luisa Barreto told Reuters the state will file a court document requesting the talks over the current proposal to continue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tr-strong\">\u201cOur understanding is that it is not a perfect proposal, it is not something we can sign, but it allows us to continue with the talks,\u201d she said<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Questioned about the matter, BHP reiterated it remains committed to reparation and compensation measures, and remains willing to collectively seek solutions that guarantee fair and comprehensive reparation for people.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tr-strong\">Vale said it remains engaged in reaching a fair and full repair agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tr-strong\">Samarco said it remains open to dialog and seeks to conclude the discussion on the agreement without shirking its responsibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>($1 = 5.0734 reais)<\/p>\n<p>Vale, BHP offer $25 billion settlement for Mariana disaster;
