Firms can establish<\/span><span> risk-management policies and procedures for dealing with these sensitive situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The personal finance website <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wallethub.com\/\"><span>WalletHub<\/span><\/a><span> brings this critical issue to the fore by comparing elder-abuse protections across the United States. Its dataset ranges from the volume of elder-abuse, gross-neglect and exploitation complaints to states\u2019 laws dealing with financial elder abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFalling prey to financial abuse can have dire consequences for anyone, but our older population is particularly susceptible,\u201d WalletHub analyst <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/cassandra-happe-3a97a473\/\"><span>Cassandra Happe<\/span><\/a><span> said in a statement. \u201cAbuse can greatly impact their ability to afford basic necessities, especially since many seniors are on a fixed income.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Federal Trade Commission recently reported that <\/span><span>older adults reported losing more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/news\/press-releases\/2023\/10\/ftc-issues-annual-report-congress-agencys-actions-protect-older-adults\"><span>$1.6 billion to fraud<\/span><\/a><span> in 2022. But prevalence of abuse \u2014 in all its manifestations \u2014 may be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ojp.gov\/feature\/elder-abuse\/overview\"><span>much higher<\/span><\/a><span> than official reports indicate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To determine the states with the best protection against elder abuse, WalletHub researchers compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across these key dimensions:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Prevalence<\/b><span> (40 points), including share of elder-abuse, gross-neglect and exploitation complaints and estimated elder fraud rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Resources <\/b><span>(30 points), including total expenditures on prevention per resident 65 and older and total long-term care ombudsman program funding per resident 65 and older<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Protection <\/b><span>(30 points), including financial elder-abuse laws and frequency of assisted-living facilities inspections<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>They evaluated these dimensions using 16 relevant metrics and scored each one on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing the \u201cbest protection against elder abuse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Finally, they determined each state\u2019s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>See the accompanying gallery for the 12 states with the best elder-abuse protections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <button data-toggle=\"modal\" data-target=\"#slideshowModal\" class=\"start-slideshow carousel-control slideshow-btn life-health\">Start Slideshow <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thinkadvisor.com\/assets\/master-template\/images\/market-images\/tasr\/rightarrow.svg\" class=\"prevbtn-img\"><\/button><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Start Slideshow The U.S. population is growing older: In 2017, the Census Bureau predicted that the number of Americans 65 and older would nearly double to 95 million by 2060.
