The quake can be felt in major cities like Xi\u2019an and Chengdu. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CrDeQBbnyO\">pic.twitter.com\/CrDeQBbnyO<\/a><br \/><\/em><em>\u2014 People\u2019s Daily, China (@PDChina) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PDChina\/status\/1736852304068857982?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">Dec. 18, 2023<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Xi said officials needed \u201cto go all out to conduct search and rescue operations, treat the injured in a timely manner and minimize casualties,\u201d Xinhua said.<\/p>\n<p>The earthquake occurred in Jishishan county in Gansu, which ranked 27<sup>th<\/sup> out of 31 Chinese provinces and municipalities in terms of GDP size in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Rural Jishishan is some 90 kilometers (55 miles) southwest of Gansu\u2019s capital of Lanzhou. Rescue operations may be complicated by the weather as northern China deals with a cold snap.<\/p>\n<p>Xinjiang, another northwestern region, was struck by a <a href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20231219\/40d1dce22197492d8fe8347440f530d0\/c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5.5-magnitude quake<\/a> on Tuesday with no immediate reports of casualties or damages.<\/p>\n<p><em>Photograph: Rescue workers search for survivors after an earthquake in Kangdiao village, in Gansu province, in China, on Dec. 19, 2023.
