{"id":21002,"date":"2023-11-17T21:25:51","date_gmt":"2023-11-17T21:25:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurance-canada.ca\/?p=79025"},"modified":"2023-11-17T21:25:51","modified_gmt":"2023-11-17T21:25:51","slug":"better-protecting-consumers-against-harmful-it-risks-fsra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2023\/11\/17\/better-protecting-consumers-against-harmful-it-risks-fsra\/","title":{"rendered":"Better protecting consumers against harmful IT risks: FSRA"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>FSRA releases final IT Risk Management Guidance<\/h3>\n<p>Toronto, ON (Nov. 8, 2023) \u2013 The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of <span class=\"xn-location\">Ontario<\/span> (FSRA) is pleased to announce it is taking active steps to further protect consumers and their data against harmful IT risks, such as cyber threats, with the release of the final Information Technology (IT) Risk Management Guidance, following robust consultation.<\/p>\n<p>The Guidance will help FSRA-regulated sectors and individuals effectively manage threats to their IT systems, infrastructure and data.<\/p>\n<p>The Guidance includes:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Seven practices for effective IT risk management<\/li>\n<li>A process to notify FSRA in the event of an IT risk incident<\/li>\n<li>Sector-specific requirements for credit unions and caisses populaires, <span class=\"xn-location\">Ontario<\/span>-incorporated insurance companies and reciprocals, and pension plan administrators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Regulated entities must still comply with&nbsp;existing requirements related to IT risk and the protection of personal information, including the requirements of the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.priv.gc.ca\/en\/privacy-topics\/privacy-laws-in-canada\/the-personal-information-protection-and-electronic-documents-act-pipeda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (\u201cPIPEDA\u201d)<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the feedback gathered from <span class=\"xn-chron\">January 23 to March 31, 2023<\/span>, FSRA amended the proposed guidance as identified in the consultation summary. Some changes include:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>The effective date of the Guidance has been changed from <span class=\"xn-chron\">June 2023<\/span> to <span class=\"xn-chron\">April 1, 2024<\/span><\/li>\n<li>The IT incident reporting timeframe has been updated to \u201cas soon as feasible, which would normally fall within the 48 to 72 hours range\u201d<\/li>\n<li>More flexibility to inform FSRA in the event of a material incident, including using a secure portal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>FSRA thanks all stakeholders for their comments and feedback. The final Guidance and summary of feedback are now available on FSRA\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wcag-arialevel-3\" role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"3\"><b>Learn More<\/b><\/div>\n<p>FSRA continues to work on behalf of all stakeholders, including consumers, to ensure financial safety, fairness, and choice for everyone.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"smallhead\"><b>About FSRA<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>FSRA is an independent regulatory agency created to improve consumer and pension plan beneficiary protections in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>FSRA was established to replace the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO)&nbsp;and the Deposit Insurance Corporation of Ontario (DICO).
