{"id":20894,"date":"2023-10-26T16:20:46","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T16:20:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurance-canada.ca\/?p=78684"},"modified":"2023-10-26T16:20:46","modified_gmt":"2023-10-26T16:20:46","slug":"canadians-feel-unsafe-in-their-communities-as-auto-theft-crisis-escalates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2023\/10\/26\/canadians-feel-unsafe-in-their-communities-as-auto-theft-crisis-escalates\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadians feel unsafe in their communities as auto theft crisis escalates"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Study finds more than 80% of Canadians say they are concerned about community safety due to the auto theft crisis, while the number of stolen vehicles continues to increase after historic highs in 2022<\/h3>\n<p>Vancouver, BC (Oct. 13, 2023) \u2013 \u00c9quit\u00e9&nbsp;Association has released its <em><strong>First Half of 2023 Auto Theft Trend Report<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;it is clear that <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada\u2019s<\/span> auto theft crisis is getting worse. Furthermore, according to a recent survey, the continued rise in auto theft is having a significant impact on Canadians\u2019 sense of safety.<\/p>\n<p>The survey, which was conducted among members of the Angus Reid forum in <span class=\"xn-chron\">September 2023<\/span>, found that:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><b>84%<\/b>&nbsp;of Canadians say the rise in auto theft makes them concerned about the increase in crime in their community<\/li>\n<li><b>69%<\/b>&nbsp;say the rise in auto theft makes them concerned about their personal safety and\/or the safety of their family<\/li>\n<li><b>65%<\/b>&nbsp;say that government, auto manufacturers, law enforcement and the courts need to work together to fix this issue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cCanadians are feeling vulnerable,\u201d said <span class=\"xn-person\">Terri O\u2019Brien<\/span>, President &amp; CEO of \u00c9quit\u00e9 Association. \u201cThe majority of Canadians are clearly worried about how this alarming increase in auto theft will impact the crime rate in their communities, and they are especially concerned for their personal safety and the safety of their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00c9quit\u00e9 Association\u2019s First Half of 2023 Auto Theft Trend Report found that:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Provinces with the highest auto theft continue to be&nbsp;<b><span class=\"xn-location\">Ontario<\/span> <\/b>and<b> <span class=\"xn-location\">Quebec<\/span><\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>Auto theft in <span class=\"xn-location\">Ontario<\/span> increased by<b> 31% <\/b>year-over-year in the first half of 2023<\/li>\n<li>Auto theft in <span class=\"xn-location\">Quebec<\/span> increased by<b> 17%<\/b> year-over-year in the first half of 2023<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The national vehicle recovery rate is&nbsp;<b>57%<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>The lowest provincial recovery rates are in <span class=\"xn-location\">Ontario<\/span> (<b>46%<\/b>) and <span class=\"xn-location\">Quebec<\/span> (<b>38%<\/b>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The lower recovery rates <span class=\"xn-location\">Ontario<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Quebec<\/span> indicate that stolen vehicles from those provinces are either:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Being shipped overseas, mostly through the Port of <span class=\"xn-location\">Montreal<\/span>; or<\/li>\n<li>The vehicle identification number (VIN) is being changed in order to resell the vehicle domestically to unsuspecting Canadians.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cCanadians expect to see a collaborative approach to combatting this crisis,\u201d said <span class=\"xn-person\">Bryan Gast<\/span>, VP of Investigative Services at \u00c9quit\u00e9 Association. \u201c\u00c9quit\u00e9 is committed to continuing its work with Public Safety and CBSA, as well as our partners in law enforcement across <span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span> who are working diligently to fix this problem,\u201d said Gast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is however more that can be done to address the auto theft crisis in the short-term. Prioritizing stolen vehicles at our ports is one immediate solution, as is deepening the partnership and information sharing between Public Safety, CBSA and \u00c9quit\u00e9 Association. This problem won\u2019t be fixed in isolation. The survey results were balanced and weighted on age, gender, region and education according to the latest census data.
