No Imminent Recession<\/h2>\n

\u201cWe just don\u2019t see any major signs saying a recession is imminent,\u201d Detrick said, noting that economists and analysts have been anticipating one for over a year and a half. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe still see a strong consumer, we still see a strong labor market, we see manufacturing start to showing bigtime signs of improvement,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earnings Are Strong<\/h2>\n

\u201cEarnings continue to impress,\u201d Detrick said, citing FactSet data indicating forward 12-month S&P 500 earnings at an all-time high, at $240 a share.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we saw the last couple of months when some worries popped up, corporate America still was saying \u2018Hey, we see see better times coming and stronger earnings,\u201d and that\u2019s something Carson is stressing to advisors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re probably going to have record earnings growth next year,\u201d which doesn\u2019t happen in recessions, Detrick said. \u201cThis bull market is still alive and well into next year.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

He noted that the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average aren\u2019t even at all-time highs. \u201cThere\u2019s plenty of gas in the tank,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of market sectors, Carson is market neutral toward tech stocks, given valuation concerns, and sees opportunity in cyclicals, industrials, energy and financials for the rest of 2023. \u201cThose areas could outperform and do better than technology,\u201d which may take more of a \u201cbreather\u201d than the rest of the market, Detrick said.<\/p>\n

Negative Sentiment<\/h2>\n

The market is showing \u201cpockets of negativity\u201d on just the 5% correction, and \u201cwe like that,\u201d Detrick said, noting that Carson was \u201cvery lonely\u2019 predicting a strong strong market and economy coming into 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to see the weak hands being flushed out, we want to see some negativity,\u201d he said, adding that some long-term market bears threw up their hands in August and increased their  S&P 500 targets.<\/p>\n

 Student loans, strikes and shutdowns are causing legitimate concerns in the market, but \u201cwe think it\u2019s a positive thing because we think the markets\u2019 pricing some of these things in,\u201d Carson said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf we get any better news, like we think we will because the economy\u2019s still on a good footing, (some doubt that\u2019s come in) could be what\u2019s necessary to push markets to new all-time highs,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

In the most recent government shutdown, the S&P posted gains as the market took it in stride, Detrick noted. An with an election next year, a shutdown likely won\u2019t last very long and markets expect it, he said. As for a strike by autoworkers, Detrick expects a resolution, given government involvement, and doesn\u2019t see it causing a major disruption to the economy.<\/p>\n
