{"id":20684,"date":"2023-09-08T16:49:32","date_gmt":"2023-09-08T16:49:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/?p=739666"},"modified":"2023-09-08T16:49:32","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T16:49:32","slug":"class-action-claims-mobile-home-park-managers-conspired-to-fix-and-inflate-lot-rental-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2023\/09\/08\/class-action-claims-mobile-home-park-managers-conspired-to-fix-and-inflate-lot-rental-prices\/","title":{"rendered":"Class Action Claims Mobile Home Park Managers Conspired to Fix and Inflate Lot Rental Prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"nav nav-tabs tabs tabs-entry\">\n<li class=\"active\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/midwest\/2023\/09\/08\/739666.htm\">Article<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/midwest\/2023\/09\/08\/739666.htm?comments\" rel=\"nofollow\">0 Comments<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<p>CHICAGO (AP) \u2013 A lawsuit seeking class-action status accuses nine mobile home community management companies and a mobile home market data provider of conspiring to fix and inflate lot rental prices at more than 150 locations across the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit filed last week in federal court in Chicago claims the management companies bought up mobile home parks and used \u201ccompetitively sensitive market data\u201d provided by Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Datacomp Appraisal Systems Inc. to exchange pricing information and conspire to raise rents.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-topics=\"claims,lawsuits\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn the face of these significant manufactured home lot rent increases, some manufactured home residents were not only facing severe financial pressures, but even the threat of eviction,\u201d Gregory Asciolla, an attorney with Chicago-based DiCello Levitt, one of the law firms filing the suit, said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese individuals \u2013 whose median annual household income is approximately $35, 000 \u2013 were overcharged for what was meant to be affordable housing,\u201d DiCello Levitt partner Adam Levitt said. \u201cManufactured home lot rental prices were blatantly inflated at a staggering rate of 9.1% per year between 2019 and 2021. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>The purchases have put residents in a bind, since most mobile homes \u2013 despite the name \u2013 cannot be moved easily or cheaply. Owners are forced to either accept unaffordable rent increases, spend thousands of dollars to move their home, or abandon it and lose tens of thousands of dollars they invested.<\/p>\n<p>Telephone and electronic messages seeking comment were left for Datacomp and its Chicago-based parent company, Equity LifeStyle Properties.<\/p>\n<div class=\"copyright-notice lite\">Copyright 2023 Associated Press.
