{"id":20359,"date":"2023-06-23T12:49:54","date_gmt":"2023-06-23T12:49:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/?p=727110"},"modified":"2023-06-23T12:49:54","modified_gmt":"2023-06-23T12:49:54","slug":"3m-reaches-tentative-10-3b-deal-over-forever-chemicals-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2023\/06\/23\/3m-reaches-tentative-10-3b-deal-over-forever-chemicals-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"3M Reaches Tentative $10.3B Deal Over \u2018Forever Chemicals\u2019 Claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/app\/uploads\/2023\/06\/3M-logo-Bigstock-580x387.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/app\/uploads\/2023\/06\/3M-logo-Bigstock-scaled.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<ul class=\"nav nav-tabs tabs tabs-entry\">\n<li class=\"active\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/national\/2023\/06\/23\/727110.htm\">Article<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/national\/2023\/06\/23\/727110.htm?comments\" rel=\"nofollow\">0 Comments<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\"> <span class=\"tts-notice\"><span>New<\/span> You can now listen to Insurance Journal articles!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"tr-story-p1\">3M Co has reached a $10.3 billion settlement with a host of U.S. public water systems to resolve water pollution claims tied to \u201cforever chemicals,\u201d the chemical company announced on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The company said the settlement would provide the funds over a 13-year period to cities, towns and other public water systems to test and treat contamination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"79\" data-revive-topics=\"chemicals,claims,numbers\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>3M, which is facing thousands of lawsuits over PFAS contamination, did not admit liability, and said the money will help support remediation at public water systems that detect PFAS \u201cat any level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have reached the largest drinking water settlement in American history, which will be used to help filter PFAS from drinking water that is served to the public,\u201d Scott Summy, a lead attorney for the water systems suing 3M, said in a statement. \u201cThe result is that millions of Americans will have healthier lives without PFAS in their drinking water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3M had been scheduled to face a test trial in South Carolina federal court earlier this month in a lawsuit brought by Stuart, Florida. The judge overseeing the case delayed the trial the morning it was set to start.<\/p>\n<p>Stuart claimed in its 2018 lawsuit that the company made or sold firefighting foams containing PFAS that polluted local soil and groundwater, and sought more than $100 million for filtration and remediation. It was one of more than 4,000 lawsuits filed against 3M and other chemical companies.<\/p>\n<p>Dubbed \u201cforever chemicals\u201d as they do not easily break down in the human body or environment, PFAS are used in a wide range of products from non-stick cookware to cosmetics and have been linked to cancer, hormonal dysfunction and environmental damage.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has called PFAS an \u201curgent public health and environmental issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"bzn bzn-sized bzn-intext-2\">\n<ins data-revive-zoneid=\"162\" data-revive-topics=\"chemicals,claims,numbers\" data-revive-companies data-revive-block=\"1\" data-revive-id=\"36eb7c2bd3daa932a43cc2a8ffbed3a9\"><\/ins> <\/div>\n<p>The EPA has taken several steps in recent years to tighten regulations for the chemicals, and in March announced the first-ever national drinking water standards for six of the chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>3M in December set a 2025 deadline to stop producing PFAS.<\/p>\n<p>Three other major chemicals companies \u2013 Chemours Co, DuPont de Nemours Inc and Corteva Inc announced earlier this month that they had reached an agreement in principle for $1.19 billion to settle claims they contaminated U.S. public water systems with PFAS.<\/p>\n<p>3M still faces PFAS-related lawsuits filed by individuals with personal injury and property damage claims, as well as by U.S. states over damages to natural resources such as rivers and lakes that were not part of the settlement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tagtag\"> <span class=\"tagtag\">Topics<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/claims\/\" class=\"btn btn-sm btn-primary tagtag\">Claims<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/numbers\/\" class=\"btn btn-sm btn-primary tagtag\">Numbers<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/chemicals\/\" class=\"btn btn-sm btn-primary tagtag\">Chemicals<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-poll\" data-post=\"727110\">\n<div class=\"article-poll-vote\">\n<p>Was this article valuable?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-poll-feedback voted-no\">\n<form class=\"feedback-form\">\n<p>Thank you!
