{"id":20189,"date":"2020-11-11T09:00:27","date_gmt":"2020-11-11T14:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/gm-canada-unifor-agreement-covers-db-pension-changes-152400"},"modified":"2020-11-11T09:00:27","modified_gmt":"2020-11-11T14:00:27","slug":"gm-canada-unifor-agreement-covers-db-pension-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2020\/11\/11\/gm-canada-unifor-agreement-covers-db-pension-changes\/","title":{"rendered":"GM Canada, Unifor agreement covers DB pension changes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"alignleft clearfix\">\n<div class=\"wp-caption feature-image alignleft\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"316\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/GM_107887120_123RF.jpg\" class=\"attachment-feature size-feature wp-post-image\" alt=\"Copyright : Linda Parton\" title=\"GM Canada, Unifor agreement covers DB pension changes\"> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"byline\"> <span>Blake Wolfe<\/span>&nbsp;|&nbsp;November 11, 2020 <\/p>\n<p>The union representing General Motors of Canada Co. employees in Ontario have ratified a new three-year collective agreement that removes changes to a legacy defined benefit plan as part of ongoing pension discussions.<\/p>\n<p>The deal restores the legacy DB plan by removing a member contribution requirement and a 30-year cap on credited service introduced in 2009, says&nbsp;Corey Vermey, director of the pensions and benefits department at Unifor.<\/p>\n<p>The DB change takes place ahead of additional pension discussions for employees&nbsp;in the organization\u2019s hybrid plan (hired between 2012 and 2016) and defined contribution plan (those hired within the last four years), he adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/pensions\/db\/dc-pension-deal-with-gm-to-certainly-influence-talks-with-ford-chrysler-lawyer-87741\">DC pension deal with GM to \u2018certainly influence\u2019 talks with Ford, Chrysler: lawyer<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this&nbsp;round of negotiations, the union&nbsp;stipulated that there will be a more serious conversation about moving to the Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology pension plan\u2019s DBplus in the future, says Vermey, noting the union sees this as a solution for all employees hired after 2016. \u201cIn 2023, there needs to be a conversation about the hybrid members and whether it makes sense for them to move to the legacy DB or to CAAT.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unifor also clarified that employees hired since 2016, who aren\u2019t entitled to health benefits in retirement, will join an employee life and health trust. And the union will also&nbsp;discuss the administration of a new $500 medical cannabis benefit for employees, he adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/ford-unifor-agreement-tackles-pension-medical-cannabis-racial-inequality-150482\">Ford, Unifor agreement tackles pension, medical cannabis, racial inequality<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The deal, which was reached ahead of Unifor\u2019s strike deadline on Nov. 4, includes workers at GM plants in the Ontario municipalities of Oshawa,&nbsp;St. Catharines and Woodstock.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;agreement also&nbsp;includes five per cent increases to hourly rates, a $7,250 productivity and quality bonus, a total of $4,000 in inflation protection bonuses, shift premiums and restoration of the 20 per cent wage differential for skilled trades, according to a press release from the union.<\/p>\n<p>Unifor and GM have also agreed to create an anti-racism action plan and establish a new racial justice advocate in the workplace and.
