While overall penetration is estimated at about 6-8% of insurers\u2019 books, some insurers\u2019 penetration rates have reached 30-35%. In a new report, <em><strong>Telematics in Insurance: Overview and Key Issues<\/strong><\/em>, research and advisory firm Novarica examines the current state of telematics in personal auto insurance, including insurer activity, adoption rates, common program features, and the design of telematics-based insurance products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelematics doesn\u2019t have to become dominant to affect consumer expectations around price, convenience, and service,\u201d said Harry Huberty, Chief of Staff at Novarica and author the new report. \u201cInsurers taking a \u2018wait-and-see\u2019 approach to telematics should be mindful of the effect that expansion of telematics may have on their books of business as less safe drivers \u2018attrition out\u2019 of their competitors\u2019 telematics programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurance-canada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Novarica-telematics-20201020.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-68475\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insurance-canada.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Novarica-telematics-20201020-1024x579.jpg\" alt width=\"640\" height=\"362\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Among the key findings of the report are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Overall penetration is about 6-8% of insurers\u2019 books, with some up to 35%.<\/strong>&nbsp;Telematics won\u2019t become dominant in the near future, but some insurers are having substantial successes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Value-added services and user experience are becoming more important.<\/strong>&nbsp;Telematics offerings are increasingly seen as customer-engagement opportunities\u2014which requires that insurers support them appropriately.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Insurers should buy, not build, their telematics capabilities.<\/strong>&nbsp;The solution market is maturing, and insurers should leverage partners when developing their offerings or adding features.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/novarica.com\/telematics-in-insurance-overview-and-key-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Click here<\/a> for the table of contents or to access the report.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Report Summary<br \/><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This report examines the current state of telematics in personal auto insurance, including insurer activity, adoption rates, common program features, an overview of the provider market, and the design of telematics-based insurance products.<\/p>\n<p>Telematics has emerged as a significant segment of the personal and commercial automotive and fleet insurance markets.
