{"id":19710,"date":"2020-09-29T09:05:43","date_gmt":"2020-09-29T13:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/most-canadians-would-choose-greater-retirement-security-over-more-money-now-survey-150375"},"modified":"2020-09-29T09:05:43","modified_gmt":"2020-09-29T13:05:43","slug":"most-canadians-would-choose-greater-retirement-security-over-more-money-now-survey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2020\/09\/29\/most-canadians-would-choose-greater-retirement-security-over-more-money-now-survey\/","title":{"rendered":"Most Canadians would choose greater retirement security over more money now: survey"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"alignleft clearfix\">\n<div class=\"wp-caption feature-image alignleft\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"316\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Canada-Pension.png\" class=\"attachment-feature size-feature wp-post-image\" alt title=\"Most Canadians would choose greater retirement security over more money now: survey\"> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"byline\"> <span>Staff <\/span>&nbsp;|&nbsp;September 29, 2020 <\/p>\n<p>Three-quarters (74 per cent) of Canadians said they\u2019d accept a slightly lower salary in exchange for a better \u2014 or any \u2014 pension plan, according to a new survey by the&nbsp;Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan and Abacus Data.<\/p>\n<p>The survey, which was conducted online in May and June among 3,500 Canadians aged 18 or older, showed a slight drop from the 80 per cent of respondents who said the same thing last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s findings reaffirm Canadians\u2019 personal and societal concerns around retirement security,\u201d said Steven McCormick, senior vice-president of plan operations at the HOOPP, in a press release. \u201cImmediate public health and financial considerations stemming from COVID-19 have not changed Canadians\u2019 commitment to pensions and their willingness to pay for them to ensure a better future for themselves and for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/80-of-canadians-would-prefer-pension-improvements-over-salary-increase-hoopp-136785\">80% of Canadians would prefer pension improvements over salary increase: HOOPP<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">In relation to the coronavirus pandemic, 57 per cent of respondents reported that their own financial situation has been harmed since March, while 62 per cent said they\u2019re concerned about the value of their investments\/savings as a result of&nbsp;the pandemic. In addition, more Canadians are concerned about their retirement security (55 per cent) than&nbsp;their job security (44 per cent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Despite these immediate and personal concerns, Canadians are taking a long-term view, with 72 per cent of survey respondents who agreed&nbsp;there\u2019s an emerging retirement income crisis and 84 per cent saying it\u2019s in everyone\u2019s best interests for more people to have better retirement savings. Indeed, 77 per cent said they believe the economy will suffer without good pensions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The survey also found 76 per cent of respondents said they\u2019re concerned that if workers are unable to access good workplace pensions and contribute during their working lives, they will eventually become a burden on the taxpayer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cCanadians have observed the erosion of workplace pension plans and they are concerned about the impacts \u2014 for individuals, for the economy and on public funds,\u201d said David Coletto, chief executive officer of Abacus Data. \u201cAnd they have an expectation that their employers will help, as 76 per cent said companies have a responsibility to offer pensions that provide adequate retirement income.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/whats-next-for-canadas-retirement-income-system-138994\">What\u2019s next for Canada\u2019s retirement income system?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The majority (86 per cent) of survey respondents said all workers should have access to efficient retirement savings arrangements, while 82 per cent agreed all employees should have a pension that guarantees a percentage of their working income in retirement.
