{"id":18908,"date":"2020-07-08T09:00:41","date_gmt":"2020-07-08T13:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/plan-members-increasingly-open-to-virtual-care-pharmacogenetics-survey-147392"},"modified":"2020-07-08T09:00:41","modified_gmt":"2020-07-08T13:00:41","slug":"plan-members-increasingly-open-to-pharmacogenetics-virtual-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2020\/07\/08\/plan-members-increasingly-open-to-pharmacogenetics-virtual-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Plan members increasingly open to pharmacogenetics, virtual care"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"alignleft clearfix\">\n<div class=\"wp-caption feature-image alignleft\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"316\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/0318_Pharmacogenetic.jpg\" class=\"attachment-feature size-feature wp-post-image\" alt title=\"Plan members increasingly open to pharmacogenetics, virtual care\"> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"byline\"> <span>Staff<\/span>&nbsp;|&nbsp;July 8, 2020 <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Virtual-care options are gaining ground, according to the 2020 Sanofi Canada health-care survey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Looking at a scenario where plan members would receive health-care services through secure digital chat or video devices \u2014&nbsp;where the health-care&nbsp;professionals aren\u2019t the member\u2019s usual providers, but would&nbsp;be able to share the consultation information with them&nbsp;if requested&nbsp;\u2014 71 per cent said they\u2019d be willing to use&nbsp;these services.&nbsp;Plan members between ages 18 and 34 were more likely&nbsp;(76 per cent) to say so&nbsp;compared to those aged 55 and older (63 per cent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cVirtual health care is expanding and rightly so,\u201d said&nbsp;M\u00e9lina Lamarche, director of product development at la Capitale Insurance and Financial Services and a member of the Sanofi Canada advisory board. \u201cIt provides personalized medical support anytime, anywhere. The financial benefits are significant and employees are very interested. They are ready. The time has come to seize such opportunities to reinvent group insurance through digital means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Read:&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/canadians-cite-91-satisfaction-rate-with-virtual-health-care-survey-146821\"><strong>Canadians cite 91% satisfaction rate with virtual health care<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The survey also found&nbsp;74 per cent of plan members said they\u2019d be open to allowing their physician to get a sample of their DNA by cheek swab so&nbsp;they can prescribe a medication most likely to be effective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Of 15 potential new benefits offerings \u2014 some of which would be covered by health-care spending or wellness accounts \u2014 plan members were most likely to choose&nbsp;immunizations for infectious diseases (37 per cent), fitness classes (33 per cent), health-risk screenings with health-care professionals (32 per cent), 24-hour virtual care (32 per cent) and genetic testing to help determine risk for certain diseases (29 per cent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Plan sponsor respondents were aligned with members on the issue of immunizations (32 per cent), somewhat aligned on screenings (28 per cent), virtual care (24 per cent) and fitness classes (22 per cent), while genetic testing (13 per cent) wasn\u2019t as popular a response. More (27 per cent) plan sponsors said they\u2019re&nbsp;interested in covering one-on-one education with a health-care expert for people with chronic conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/does-pharmacogenetic-testing-have-a-place-in-long-term-disability-programs-145659\">Pharmacogenetic testing\u2019s place in long-term disability programs<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When considering&nbsp;the option of having these items offered at discounted rates rather than directly added to the health benefits plan, 63 per cent of plan members said they\u2019d view their employer more positively. Those aged 18 to 34 were more likely&nbsp;(69 per cent) to&nbsp;feel this way compared to&nbsp;members age 55 and older (59 per cent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-147395 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-23-at-9.10.17-PM.png\" alt width=\"409\" height=\"337\">Responding to the list of 15 potential new benefits offerings, 20 per cent of plan members indicated they or a family member would use medical cannabis authorized by a health-care provider if it were covered by their benefits plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Plan members with chronic conditions were more likely to say they\u2019d use medical cannabis if they have&nbsp;asthma\/lung disease (36 per cent), mental illness (35 per cent), arthritis (28 per cent) and chronic pain (26 per cent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cA growing role for insurance carriers is to vet possible providers of new benefits to evaluate the quality of the outcomes and identify which providers are a good fit for the unique needs of the workplace,\u201d said Marie-Chantal C\u00f4t\u00e9, vice-president of market development for group benefits at Sun Life and&nbsp;a member of the Sanofi Canada advisory board. \u201cPlan sponsors can be a valuable part of that process by participating in pilot projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/a-look-at-medical-cannabis-coverages-growing-pains-138988\">A look at medical cannabis coverage\u2019s growing pains<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/plan-members-increasingly-open-to-virtual-care-pharmacogenetics-survey-147392\">Read the full article at BenefitsCanada.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Staff&nbsp;|&nbsp;July 8, 2020 Virtual-care options are gaining ground, according to the 2020 Sanofi Canada health-care survey.
