{"id":18814,"date":"2020-06-25T08:45:02","date_gmt":"2020-06-25T12:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/feds-introducing-new-regulations-to-prevent-workplace-harassment-violence-147445"},"modified":"2020-06-25T08:45:02","modified_gmt":"2020-06-25T12:45:02","slug":"feds-introducing-new-regulations-to-prevent-workplace-harassment-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2020\/06\/25\/feds-introducing-new-regulations-to-prevent-workplace-harassment-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Feds introducing new regulations to prevent workplace harassment, violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"alignleft clearfix\">\n<div class=\"wp-caption feature-image alignleft\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"316\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/WorkplaceHarassment-Shutterstock.jpg\" class=\"attachment-feature size-feature wp-post-image\" alt title=\"Feds introducing new regulations to prevent workplace harassment, violence\"> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"byline\"> <span>Staff<\/span>&nbsp;|&nbsp;June 25, 2020 <\/p>\n<p>The federal government is introducing new regulations to protect employees from harassment and violence in&nbsp;the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>The regulations, which take effect on Jan. 1, 2021, outline the necessary elements of a workplace harassment and violence prevention policy and the procedures employers&nbsp;are required to have in place to respond to any incidents.&nbsp;They apply to federally regulated workplaces, falling under Bill C-65, which is aimed at strengthening workplace harassment and violence prevention efforts. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/have-your-say-are-recent-survey-findings-in-line-with-your-experience-of-workplace-harassment-106084\">The bill, which went into effect last year<\/a>, also&nbsp;brought&nbsp;political employees under the&nbsp;cover of the Canada Labour Code\u2019s occupational health and safety and harassment and sexual violence protections for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/have-your-say-are-recent-survey-findings-in-line-with-your-experience-of-workplace-harassment-106084\">Federal government introduces bill to address workplace harassment, violence<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the regulations,&nbsp;employers\u2019 policies should&nbsp;include timelines for complaint resolution that support both the victim and alleged perpetrator, requirements for confidentiality for all parties throughout the process and protections for employees who\u2019ve been victimized by a third party, such as a client.<\/p>\n<p>The policies should also specify&nbsp;qualifications of a person considered competent to&nbsp;investigate incidents and provide recommendations, lay out&nbsp;the employer\u2019s obligations in administering corrective measures following&nbsp;an investigation and outline the support employees should be given if they\u2019ve experienced workplace harassment and violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we\u2019re taking an important step forward to ensure that federally regulated workplaces \u2014 including the federally regulated private sector, the federal public service and parliamentary workplaces \u2014 are free from harassment and violence, including sexual harassment and sexual violence,\u201d said Minister of Labour Filomena Tassi in a press release. \u201cEvery worker deserves a safe workplace, and by working together, we can make that a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/government-releases-results-of-workplace-harassment-violence-consultancy-report-129469\">Government releases results of workplace harassment, violence consultation<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In its 2018 budget, the federal government allocated $34.9 million over five years to&nbsp;support Bill C-65, with an additional $7.4 million per year afterward. Of that, an annual $3.5 million has been put toward Employment and Social Development Canada\u2019s workplace harassment and violence prevention fund.<\/p>\n<p>Five projects received grants through the fund last March.
