Prior LIMRA research indicates 40% of Americans believe they have enough saved for retirement and many express concerns about paying their mortgage and monthly bills. While about half of consumers have consistently held some confidence in insurance companies and agents since the survey began in 2008, the level of consumers with \u201cquite a bit\u201d or \u201cextreme\u201d confidence in these groups has been rising and reached record highs in this latest survey.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2020, 4 in 10 consumers had quite a bit or extreme confidence in life insurers and a third or more of consumers had quite a bit or extreme confidence in agents and advisors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the factors that may have contributed to consumers\u2019 increased confidence in life insurers was contact with one\u2019s carrier during the pandemic. A third of life insurance policyholders had heard from or reached out to their carrier since March. Of those, 7 in 10 were satisfied with the customer service they received. These individuals report very high levels of confidence in life insurance companies,\u201d noted Douglas. \u201cIt is important to note, however, that these satisfied policyholders with recent contact represents just over 10% of those surveyed. So, this is not what\u2019s solely driving the increased confidence. In fact, we see a boost in confidence among owners and non-owners alike.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Stress Levels Drop<\/h2>\n<p>While the study found consumers whose employment was negatively impacted by the pandemic (a third of the respondents) reporting higher levels of stress, generally consumers\u2019 stress levels have returned to pre-pandemic levels, and stress related to household finances is down significantly despite consumers\u2019 poor opinion of and outlook for the economy.<\/p>\n<p>It is likely that consumers\u2019 fears of the unknown have turned into relief (or, at least, a sense of resiliency and capability) as they learn to live in a world of social distance and increased time at home. Decreased spending and the federal stimulus check are also helping many people manage their financial lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe study suggests Americans feel that the worst of the pandemic may be behind us, and several LIMRA consumer trends reflect a desire to cautiously move forward,\u201d said Douglas. \u201cAs states reopen and the curve appears to flatten, concerns about COVID-19 are easing as consumers have a better sense of what our \u2018new normal\u2019 looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Methodology<\/strong><br \/>First initiated in early 2008 to gauge consumer opinion of the economy and the financial services industry, LIMRA\u2019s Consumer Sentiment Survey has continued to monitor Americans&#8217; sentiment about the economy and confidence in industries since 2008. The latest results are based on responses from 2,000 Americans ages 18+, weighted to the U.S. general population.
