{"id":18299,"date":"2020-05-07T15:30:45","date_gmt":"2020-05-07T19:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/allow-pension-plan-sponsors-to-opt-out-of-special-payments-in-short-term-urges-piac-145892"},"modified":"2020-05-07T15:30:45","modified_gmt":"2020-05-07T19:30:45","slug":"allow-pension-plan-sponsors-to-opt-out-of-special-payments-in-short-term-urges-piac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2020\/05\/07\/allow-pension-plan-sponsors-to-opt-out-of-special-payments-in-short-term-urges-piac\/","title":{"rendered":"Allow pension plan sponsors to opt out of special payments in short term, urges PIAC"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"alignleft clearfix\">\n<div class=\"wp-caption feature-image alignleft\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"316\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Dividend-money-payout-25325074_m-123RF-.jpg\" class=\"attachment-feature size-feature wp-post-image\" alt=\"Copyright : nito500\" title=\"Allow pension plan sponsors to opt out of special payments in short term, urges PIAC\"> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"byline\"> <span>Staff <\/span>&nbsp;|&nbsp;May 7, 2020 <\/p>\n<p>The Pension Investment Association of Canada is calling on provincial governments to allow&nbsp;pension plan sponsors to&nbsp;opt out of making any special payments for a period of six to 12 months or until there\u2019s greater visibility of the end of the fallout from the coronavirus crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recommend that no conditionality or approval requirements be applied to such relief, other than a requirement by companies to inform regulators of their funding plans,\u201d read a letter from the PIAC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/ontario-temporarily-slashes-penalties-for-pbgf-non-payment-due-to-coronavirus-145841\">Ontario temporarily slashes penalties for PBGF non-payment<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The letter also noted the PIAC supports the actions of some jurisdictions to temporarily freeze commuted-value transfers and\/or annuity buyouts without regulatory approval, but only for the short term. \u201cPIAC can support such restrictions on a short-term basis (i.e., six months), but does not think they will be practical to maintain as regulators may well face a scenario in coming quarters where plan sponsors need to downsize and are at the same time managing under-funded plans and operating cash-flow shortfalls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During these turbulent times, regulators should work to help those plans that can continue to pay commuted-value transfers, it said.
