{"id":18235,"date":"2020-04-30T09:15:55","date_gmt":"2020-04-30T13:15:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/does-cews-leave-workers-on-parental-disability-leave-behind-145494"},"modified":"2020-04-30T09:15:55","modified_gmt":"2020-04-30T13:15:55","slug":"does-cews-leave-workers-on-parental-disability-leave-behind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2020\/04\/30\/does-cews-leave-workers-on-parental-disability-leave-behind\/","title":{"rendered":"Does CEWS leave workers on parental, disability leave behind?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"alignleft clearfix\">\n<div class=\"wp-caption feature-image alignleft\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"316\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/AirCanada.png\" class=\"attachment-feature size-feature wp-post-image\" alt title=\"Does CEWS leave workers on parental, disability leave behind?\"> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"byline\"> <span>Martha Porado<\/span>&nbsp;|&nbsp;April 30, 2020 <\/p>\n<p>Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge employees who were on leave in the months leading up to the coronavirus shutdown appear to have fallen through a crack in the federal government\u2019s wage subsidy program.<\/p>\n<p>The Air Canada component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees has pointed out that the airline\u2019s unilateral use of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-finance\/economic-response-plan.html#wage_subsidies\">Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy<\/a> means workers who were on leave between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2020 will be at a disadvantage since that timeframe is being used by the federal government to calculate the level of salary they\u2019re replacing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/human-resources\/legislation\/a-legal-update-on-the-governments-cews-and-cerb-programs-145023\">A legal update on the government\u2019s CEWS and CERB programs<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Workers on maternity or disability leave, as well as employees on workers\u2019 compensation or previous&nbsp;leave arrangements due to the B737 grounding, deserve to have their subsidies calculated based on what they\u2019d be earning if they weren\u2019t on leave, says&nbsp;Hugh Pouliot, a&nbsp; spokesperson for the CUPE.<\/p>\n<p>He says the adoption of the CEWS across the board&nbsp;knowingly discriminates against these members and that there\u2019s been no concrete indication from the employer that it intends to address the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Air Canada didn\u2019t respond to <em>Benefits Canada<\/em>\u2018s requests for comment.
