{"id":17602,"date":"2019-11-21T09:23:49","date_gmt":"2019-11-21T14:23:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/cn-rail-workers-continue-strike-over-drug-benefits-safety-concerns-139203"},"modified":"2019-11-21T09:23:49","modified_gmt":"2019-11-21T14:23:49","slug":"cn-rail-workers-continue-strike-over-drug-benefits-safety-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2019\/11\/21\/cn-rail-workers-continue-strike-over-drug-benefits-safety-concerns\/","title":{"rendered":"CN Rail workers continue strike over drug benefits, safety concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"alignleft clearfix\">\n<div class=\"wp-caption feature-image alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/train-tracks.jpg\" class=\"attachment-feature size-feature wp-post-image\" alt title=\"CN Rail workers continue strike over drug benefits, safety concerns\"> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"byline\"><span>Staff<\/span>&nbsp;|&nbsp;November 21, 2019<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 3,200 Canadian National Railway Co. workers&nbsp;are on strike with outstanding issues including time-off provisions and lifetime caps on certain benefits.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;strike, which&nbsp;began at midnight on Nov. 19, has seen conductors, train personnel and yard workers represented by&nbsp;the&nbsp;Teamsters Canada Rail Conference pushing for further bargaining progress on these issues and others, including safety and fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>Specific to benefits, the company wants to implement a lifetime cap on prescription drug benefits, which would be \u201ctantamount to denying workers&nbsp;\u2014 and their families \u2014 proper treatment for some forms of cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and other diseases,\u201d according to the union.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/saskatchewan-school-support-workers-could-strike-over-unused-sick-leave-retirement-benefits-133022\">Saskatchewan school support workers could strike over unused sick leave retirement benefits<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCN is telling our members that they are facing tough times, but the reality is that they made over $3.8 billion in the third quarter of 2019,\u201d said Lyndon Isaak, president of the TCRC. \u201cThey should be ashamed to be pleading poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, an update from CN Rail&nbsp;highlighted&nbsp;improvements made to workers\u2019 compensation and benefits established in other recent negotiations.&nbsp;The company said, in agreements made with other unions earlier this year, it made adjustments to annual compensation at rates better than inflation in 10 out of 11 agreements.<\/p>\n<p>It said it also made improvements to&nbsp;short-term disability benefits, basic life insurance, maternity leave and vision and dental care in all 11 agreements.
