{"id":16019,"date":"2019-07-17T09:30:42","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T13:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/saskatchewan-school-support-workers-could-strike-over-unused-sick-leave-retirement-benefits-133022"},"modified":"2019-07-17T09:30:42","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T13:30:42","slug":"saskatchewan-school-support-workers-could-strike-over-unused-sick-leave-retirement-benefits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2019\/07\/17\/saskatchewan-school-support-workers-could-strike-over-unused-sick-leave-retirement-benefits\/","title":{"rendered":"Saskatchewan school support workers could strike over unused sick leave retirement benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"alignleft clearfix\">\n<div class=\"wp-caption feature-image alignleft\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"350\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/school-crossing-caution-road-sign.jpg\" class=\"attachment-feature size-feature wp-post-image\" alt title=\"Saskatchewan school support workers could strike over unused sick leave retirement benefits\"> <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"byline\"> <span>Martha Porado <\/span>&nbsp;|&nbsp;July 17, 2019 <\/p>\n<p>Support staff for the&nbsp;Prairie South School Division&nbsp;in Moose Jaw, Sask. have voted&nbsp;overwhelmingly&nbsp;in favour of job action, up to a full withdrawal of services, when the school year starts again.<\/p>\n<p>The staff, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees 5512 chapter, object to their employer\u2019s attempt to remove a long-service recognition benefit&nbsp;that provides employees with payment for 50 per cent of their unused sick leave, up to a maximum of 80 days upon retirement.<\/p>\n<p>Under the current benefit, employees can see a maximum of between $7,000&nbsp;to just over&nbsp;$14,000 depending on their wages,&nbsp;according to Dave Stevenson, a national representative for the CUPE. \u201cNow, we don\u2019t know how much sick leave anybody has, so that benefit could be zero as well.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefitscanada.com\/news\/brunswick-smelter-workers-to-vote-on-strike-over-pension-benefits-issues-127483\">Brunswick Smelter workers to vote on strike over pension, benefits issues<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following&nbsp;the vote, the&nbsp;school board&nbsp;has proposed replacing&nbsp;the former retirement benefit with&nbsp;one that totals 10 per cent of annual salary, up to a maximum of $6,000, but only for permanent employees. \u201cOur current benefit, we believe, applies to everybody, including casuals; however, the employer disagrees with us.
