{"id":15753,"date":"2019-06-24T02:06:50","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T06:06:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/insurance-journal.ca\/article\/canadians-want-rules-in-place-to-prevent-financial-exploitation\/"},"modified":"2019-06-24T02:06:50","modified_gmt":"2019-06-24T06:06:50","slug":"canadians-want-rules-in-place-to-prevent-financial-exploitation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lifeinsurance-orleans.ca\/index.php\/2019\/06\/24\/canadians-want-rules-in-place-to-prevent-financial-exploitation\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadians want rules in place to prevent financial exploitation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/insurance-journal.ca\/media\/photologue\/photos\/photo_web_3130.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>An overwhelming majority of Canadian investors believe that protective measures should be put in place to ensure that investment firms and advisors can take action when they suspect investors have become vulnerable or that others might be attempting to financially exploit them.<\/p>\n<p>In a survey released Friday by the <strong>Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada<\/strong> (IIROC), 92% agreed it is necessary to have such regulatory tools in place to allow advisors and firms to protect vulnerable investors.<\/p>\n<p>Some 93% support having a \u201ctrusted contact\u201d listed on their account \u2013 someone the firm or advisor can contact if they believe an investor has become vulnerable or may be subject to attempted financial exploitation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSafe harbour\u201d would provide firms with protection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As well, 86% support creating a regulatory \u201csafe-harbour\u201d that will provide investment advisors and firms with protection from possible regulatory sanctions if they take action to protect a potentially vulnerable investor.
