Besides letting family and friends know, there are several organisations in Ontario you need to notify when a person has passed away.\u00a0 Whether it is an expected or unexpected death, it is never easy to deal with\u00a0getting these first few things taken care of.<\/p>\n

Who to call first<\/strong><\/h2>\n

An expected death:<\/strong>\u00a0call the doctor who was caring for the deceased person.<\/p>\n

An unexpected death:<\/strong>\u00a0call emergency services first.<\/p>\n

No available doctor\/emergency services in the area:<\/strong>\u00a0contact the local coroner\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

Get a burial permit<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In most cases, funeral directors can help get a burial permit.<\/p>\n

You need a burial permit before funeral services, including cremation, can be performed. You need this permit, even if the burial or other arrangements will take place outside the province.<\/p>\n

If the death was\u00a0outside Ontario<\/strong>, but the burial and arrangements will take place in the province, you will need a\u00a0burial, transit or removal permit<\/strong>\u00a0from the jurisdiction where the death occurred.<\/p>\n

Death Registration<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A funeral director usually oversees the process of registering a death.<\/p>\n

To register,\u00a0 a funeral director submits 2 documents to a municipal clerk\u2019s office:<\/p>\n

A Medical Certificate of Death:<\/strong>\u00a0the attending doctor or a coroner completes this form, outlining the cause of death.<\/p>\n

A Statement of Death:<\/strong>\u00a0a family member and a funeral director complete this form, together. It includes personal information about the deceased (e.g., family history, age at death, place of death).<\/p>\n

Information that is gathered about causes of death can be used for medical\/health research or statistics.<\/p>\n

Get a death certificate<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You can apply for it at any time, but it cannot be issued until a death is registered.<\/p>\n
